UMUR
Kokaiinum is the 5th full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Illdisposed. The album was released through Diehard Music.
The music on the 35:04 minute long album is brutal yet catchy and at times groovy death metal. The vocals by Bo Summer are mostly deep growling in the vein of Mark "Barney" Greenway from Napalm Death, but Bo also incorporate higher pitched screams in his performance. Most notably in the song Richard Scarry. He also performs a kind of hystarical aggressive vocal type on the opening track, the football hooligan themed A Warm Welcome. While there are faster paced parts in the music too, the music is mostly mid-paced death metal with an emphasis on groove. There are only a few tracks that are a bit sub-par to the rest, but most of the album are of high quality. The brutal death metal assault is not only spiced up with lots of groove, there are also some really well played and quite melodic soloing on the album. So all in all Kokaiinum is a pretty varied album but never incoherent. Highlights are A Warm Welcome, Richard Scarry, Just Like A Clockwork, the rock´n´roll tinged A Girl And Her Boss and the "instrumental" Intellargent where Bo Summer uses his voice as an instrument. Staccato chanting growls. The melodic ending to Fear Bill Gates also caught my attention. The most important thing is that every song on the album stand out as memorable and distinguishable from each other. That´s not always the case on death metal albums.
The production by Jan Borsing is the weak link on the album. It´s not the most powerful sound I´ve ever heard and the bass drum has a hidious triggered sound that I don´t hesitate to call an abomination. The rest of the instruments and the vocals sound much better though.
Kokaiinum is a very enjoyable death metal album and while the production does drag my rating down just a bit, a 3.5 star rating is still deserved.
