After hearing Incubus countless number of poppy radio singles, one could assume they began that way, however to many's surprise they actually began as a Mr. Bungle/Primus inspired funk metal outfit, later venturing into nü-metal on their second album S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
Their debut album Fungus Amongus is the most funk influenced, and at times sounds almost like a watered down version of Mr. Bungle's first record, also at times sounding like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, there's also some Rage Against the Machine inspired rapping in songs like Take me to you Leader & Psychopsilocybin, however despite this the album is great from start to finish. Very good, funky basslines, as usual great singing from Brandon Boyd, and some "interesting" lyrics. The songs alternate between funky melodies and downtuned riffs, all to great effect.
A must have for any fan of funk metal & funk rock.
