"Paraphiliac" is the 4th full-length studio album by Italian extreme metal act Infernal Poetry. The album was released through Bakerteam Records in January 2013.
While the band are typically labelled death metal, that´s only a part of their sound on "Paraphiliac", which proves to be quite the eclectic listen. My first listen also suggested a semi-progressive edge to some of the tracks, but upon closer examination I´d call the music adventurous rather than progressive. Especially the drumming by Alessandro Vagnoni is a bit out of the ordinary and a really great asset to the band´s sound. While he certainly knows his extreme metal drumming tricks, he is the kind of drummer that understands that variation is the key to a great listen. The other guys in the band are really well playing too. Lead vocalist Paolo Ojetti has an aggressive and raw vocal delivery. He is not really a growling type vocalist but more a raw "core" type vocalist. The music can both be hard edged, brutal, technical and more atmospheric. While I hear influences from various genres and artists it´s hard to name specific influences. When the band are most atmospheric they remind me slightly of Gojira though.
To go along with the bizarre (and beautiful) cover artwork we have odd song-titles like "Hypertrophic Jellyfish", "Barf Together" and "The Copy / Paste Syndrome". It´s safe to say that "Paraphiliac" in many ways is not your regular death metal album. Upon conclusion we have here a very powerful sounding, well produced and well written extreme metal album fully deserving a 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating.
