Genre: old school metal
Described as a punk metal band by some and a speed metal / traditional metal crossover band by others, Iron Dogs embrace a DIY style and image and come across deliberately gritty.
Not having heard their debut album, I do not have a frame or reference, but this album does not strike me as particularly punky or speed metal-y. It is more of a retro affair that draws on the rougher and dirtier NWoBHM bands from the late 70s and early 80s, but with a slightly more melodic sensibility; think Badger meets Thin Lizzy. Thus, the album features hard rocking old school metal tunes with a gruff vocal style on top and a considerably twangy guitar sound, which reminds me a bit of Satan's 'Heads Will Roll'. Come to think of it, there are a couple of songs on this album that are in the same musical vein as early 80s Satan.
The production is decidedly retro with twangy guitars and rumbling drums, which definitely serves to create that authentic old school metal vibe that Iron Dogs clearly aim for.
Fans of retro metal of a more rough edge type, such as Midnight, are bound to enjoy this album as well.
