UAIOE is the fourth studio album from industrial metal/rock band KMFDM.
Only a year after the previous album, Don't Blow Your Top, KMFDM released UAIOE which began a trend of always having a five-letter album title. This would continue all the way until 2005's Hau Ruck. Also, this wasn't the only change for the band...
...as this shows the metal elements that have always been lurking in the band's sound come finally come upfront. Songs like "Thrash Up!", "En Esch", "Thumb Thumb", and to a certain extent "More and Faster" and the title cut are all headbang-ready thrash-y industrial metal which would characterize the majority of the band's following albums. This album isn't pure metal though, as there is quite a bit of variation here despite being just under thirty-four minutes long. There are some dub and reggae elements thrown in, especially the songs that feature Morgan Adjei on vocals. While that sounds strange on paper, it actually translates well into the industrial sound.
If some of the lyrics sound familiar, that's because some of the lyrics are taken from songs from What Do You Know, Deutschland?. "Loving Can Be an Art" takes lyrics from "Conillon", and "Thumb Thumb" takes lyrics from "Kickin' Ass". "En Esch" features some lyrics from Deep Purple's "Demon's Eye". As far as highlights go, the aforementioned "Thrash Up!", "Thumb Thumb", and "En Esch" are absolute killers. "Murder" is also worth a mention, as it has some killer middle-eastern guitar work and vocals.
If you aren't interested in funky industrial dance, this is a good album to start with if you're wanting to explore KMFDM. While not of Ministry's The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste caliber, this is still an excellent early industrial metal album that is definitely worth a listen. Hope you found this review helpful.
