UMUR
"Demo-92" is the first demo release by Swedish death metal act Ligament. The demo was released through small independent Swedish label Chaos Productions in 1992. Very little is known about Ligament, but they probably formed in the early 90s, and released this demo and alledgedly another demo in 1993, but the existence of the latter cannot be confirmed at present.
Stylistically the three tracks on the 10:11 minutes long demo is pretty aggressive death metal with both thrash and death´n´roll/stoner metal elements. The vocals are ultra aggressive intelligible growling, which are often doubled with a more unintelligible growling vocal style. Ligament are obviously a well playing band and especially the drumming is tight and varied, but there are also quite a few sharp and creative riffs and leads featured on the album. Considering that this is a demo recording, the sound quality is also decent, although the rhythm guitars could have prospered from a more meaty production.
10 minutes and that´s all Ligament left for the world...(if the 1993 demo turns out to be a hoax). It´s enough though to hear and understand that Ligament was not your average Entombed/Dismember clone, but instead a band with their own ideas to how they thought death metal should sound. The tracks are quite unconventional and although I praise the creativity, a more coherent style and musical direction, could probably have earned Ligament more attention than they got. A 2.5 - 3 star (55%) rating is warranted.
