"Countdown to Extinction: Live" is a live album release by US thrash/heavy metal act Megadeth. The album was released through Tradecraft Records in September 2013. The album was recorded on December the 7th, 2012 at Fox Theatre in Los Angeles on the "Countdown to Extinction 20th Anniversary Tour". A tour the band did to celebrate the 20th annniversary of their classic "Countdown to Extinction" album from 1992 (which on a sidenote is still the band´s best selling album). The band embarked on a similar tour to celebrate the 20th annniversary of "Rust in Piece (1990)" and released the "Rust In Peace Live (2010)" album in the wake of that tour. "Countdown to Extinction: Live" is also available in the DVD format.
The setlist on "Countdown to Extinction: Live" features all tracks from "Countdown to Extinction (1992)" bookended by three opening tracks and three closing tracks from other Megadeth albums. The setlist works well and that´s also true for the show as a whole which flows well. Dave Mustaine doesn´t communicate a lot with the audience, but he does talk some and also introduce the band near the end of the album and that´s good for the live feeling of the album because the band are very well playing and sometimes it´s almost like listening to a less polished version of the studio tracks. Dave Mustaine isn´t the best singer in the live environment and paired with a sound production that´s a bit tame "Countdown to Extinction: Live" isn´t the most interesting live album as far as sound quality goes.
Still this is a decent quality release with a well playing band and a good track selection and I´d say a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.
