I could never forget seeing this as I was a bonafide metal head at the time, long hair and tons of metal on vinyl was my approach to music. Metallica were the ultimate and I wore this VHS out. It is as raw as it gets. Bad quality at times, archival footage, but never a dull moment. Hetfield is young and dumb, Lars is impetuous and Kirk is well.... Kirk, and it is surreal seeing Mustaine with the band before his dramatic departure but here he is in all his glory before Megadeth was even a twinkle in his eye. The footage of Cliff is iconic now that he has gone but he was an insane personality. When he plays the infamous Anesthesia it is shattering to watch him, and then the band launch into For Whom the Bell Tolls. The band were way more raucous and living the metal lifestyle of booze and girls evidently but they were groundbreaking even in these early years. Songs like Seek and Destroy, Fight Fire With Fire and Ride The Lightning were powerful metal statements. Hetfield is more aggressive in his perfomances, more head banging all round, and they have more energy than these days obviously. They are young here and want to take over the world, and in fact they did for a while. I think it is a very worthwhile exercise to check out this video but it is very raw, and I guess works as a kind of look back at the metal scene when it was at its peak.
