Mind Funk is the self-titled debut studio album from funk metal/stoner metal band Mindfunk.

Despite their name, Mindfunk's debut is their only album with any funk. Their last two albums are more of grunge/stoner metal albums which a name like Mind Fuck may fit better. Perhaps this may be because the band originally formed as Mind Fuck, but were forced to change their name prior to signing to Epic.

For this funk metal album, don't expect straight up funk, as there is quite an eclectic mix here. I think a good comparison would be Extreme, as not only do both bands have a mix of funk and an 80's heavy rock/metal sound, but Patrick Dubar and Gary Cherone have similar sort of nasal-y vocal styles. There are, in fact, a few hints to the grunge-y stoner metal sound they would later develop especially in "Fire" which has a cool plodding doom-y dirge. Imagine Anthony Kiedis singing stoner metal, and that paints a good picture of this track. "Sister Blue" is another song that differs from the majority of the songs, being a power ballad with virtuoso-worthy soloing and nice acoustics.

Along with the occasional hint at the band's future sound, some of the funk metal tracks include some interesting combinations. One such song is "Blood Runs Red" which mixes funky rhythms with galloping heavy metal riffs not often heard in funk metal. My favorite track, by far, is "Sugar Ain't So Sweet". This is just one of the most energetic and fun songs I've ever heard, and gets me pumped every time. You've got yourself a winner when you have such a fantastic mix of razor-sharp punchy riffing and a catchy as hell chorus. "Innocence" is another of my favorites, sounding like a funky cross between Anthrax and Soundgarden.

If you're a fan of Extreme or eclectic funk metal sounds good, it would be a crime to not check this underrated gem out. A lost classic, with a performance that is among the most energetic I've heard. Check it out, for "New York City has put the devil in me!"
