UMUR
The Eternal Fall is the 2nd release by German death metal act Morgoth. The Eternal Fall is a 5 track, 18:08 minute long EP. The EP was released in May 1990 through Century Media Records. The Eternal Fall was re-released in 1991 by Century Media Records together with Morgoth´s debut EP release Resurrection Absurd (1989) on one CD.
The music on the EP is old school death metal with the strong growling vocals by Marc Grewe in front. His Chuck Schuldiner meets John Tardy type vocal delivery is pretty unique and he is part of the rare breed of death metal vocalists that stand out from the crowd. In my review of Resurrection Absurd I mentioned Leprosy (1988) by Death and Slowly We Rot (1989) by Obituary as references and those comparisons also hold true when it comes to The Eternal Fall. As such the two EPs are pretty much alike when it comes to musical style. The Eternal Fall has a better production though and the songwriting is also a notch better than on Resurrection Absurd. The opening track Burnt Identity was the track that introduced me to Morgoth. It was featured on the Roadrunner Records compilation album At Death´s Door (1990), which was one of my first death metal purchases and my introduction to acts such as Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Obituary and of course Morgoth. I always loved that track and when I got a hold of The Eternal Fall I fortunately learned that the whole EP is just as great as Burnt Identity.
The production is raw but powerful and suits the music well.
The Eternal Fall further enhanced the already high expectations to how great Morgoth´s debut album would sound, but shouldn´t merely be seen as warm up to Cursed (1991) as it is a great release in its own right. A 3.5 star rating is deserved. Old school death metal fans should be pleased with this one.
