UMUR
"Unsilent Death" is the debut full-length studio album by US grindcore act Nails. The album was released by Six Feet Under Records. Calling the release a full-length studio album may sound a bit strange to some people as the total running time is actually only 13:57 minutes but "Unsilent Death" is released as a full-length studio album and not an EP.
The music on the album is grindcore with a brutal hardcore edge. While the album is almost over before you notice it, the 10 tracks on the album actually manage to impress a lot. It doesn´t get much more aggressive than this ( the vocals are raw and angry as hell), so while the mood on the album is pretty one-dimensional ( not that it´s the slightest problem to me), Nails manage to put enough variation into the songs to make them stand out from each other. You´ll find both blasting parts and mid-paced groove based hardcore sections too. All delivered with great conviction and skill. Songs like the opening trio "Conform", "Scum Will Rise" and "Your God" are short bursts of extreme anger while the songs like "Suffering Soul", the title track and the closing "Depths" are examples of the hardcore side of the band´s sound.
The production is filthy and heavy and creates the right environment for the songs to make the most impact. There´s always the threat of a nasty feed-back just around the corner and that´s how I like it. The sound isn´t lo-fi though and you can easily hear what´s being played.
So if you enjoy your grindcore with lots of aggressive and heavy hardcore elements, I can highly recommend "Unsilent Death". This is the kind of music that will put you in the mood for a fight and I would really like to witness a Nails live show, to see how the crowd reacts to this kind of music. "Unsilent Death" is the epitome of the phrase "sonic violence" and of course a black onyx like this one deserves a 4 star rating.
