Church of disgust...

Genre: thrash metal / death metal / grindcore

Nunslaughter are one of the more productive underground metal bands out there, having released uncountable underground releases including demos, EPs, splits and what not. "Demoslaughter" collects their early demos and should be of vital interest to fans of the band. The most interesting aspect of this release is that it documents the early history of this cult band. This is, unless you are a hardcore fan, more interesting that the music itself, which on the first demos is of dubious quality (but, the music gets stronger, as we follow the band's development through time).

The production is extremely bad on the first ten tracks, which capture the 'Ritual of Darkness' and 'The Rotting Christ' demos, and one can barely make out what the hell is going on musically. One thing that can be observed is how Nunslaughter seemed to not know in which direction to go in their early years. The tracks from 'Ritual of Darkness' fall under the rubric of primitive death metal, while those from 'The Rotting Christ' are more grindcore-oriented. The 'Impale the Soul' tracks combine the death metal and grindcore elements of the previous two demos, and the four tracks from 'The Guts of Christ' introduce thrash metal and crust punt elements into the sound, taking it a slight step in the direction of the retro death-thrash style Nunslaughter are known for nowadays. Going back to grindcore and death metal the tracks from 'Face of Evil' and 'Evil Speaks' show a band looking back to its original style, but whose skills as musicians have developed considerably.

While disc 1 features the band's earliest demos, disc two contains rehearsal recordings and miscellaneous items, such as raw mixes, take-outs and jams. These are of course interesting to hardcore fans of the band, and if you dabbled in the recordings of demos around the same time as Nunslaughter, then you might get a kick out of disc 2 as well.

I would say that this compilation appeals primarily to fans, and if you have never heard Nunslaughter before, then I recommend that you buys some of their EPs or one of their albums before you start exploring their very early material.
