UMUR
"The Fart That Should Not Be" is the first demo recording by Norwegian death metal act Old Funeral. The demo was independently released in 1989. Old Funeral formed in 1988 as Funeral, but added the Old word to their monicker later the same year to become Old Funeral. Old Funeral disbanded in 1992 after releasing two demos and an EP. Three of the members went on to form Immortal, while guitarist Kristian "Varg" Vikernes formed Burzum. So Old Funeral was definitely a breeding ground for some of the later prolific members of the Norwegian black metal scene (very few of them played in the band at the same time though). On this first demo Old Funeral is the trio of Olve "On the Egg" (later Abbath) on vocals/bass, Padde (Jan Atle Åserød) on drums, and Tore Bratseth on guitars.
Stylistically the 7 tracks on the 19:18 minutes long demo is in a blackened thrash/proto-death metal style. It´s a relatively primitive, noisy, and murky sounding production, and while some tracks feature some fine thrashy riffing, the songwriting isn´t that interesting. The vocals are snarling screaming and have nothing to do with death metal growling. It´s not a bad quality release on all departments, but it´s obvious that Old Funeral were a very young and immature band at this point, and it´s a warts and all type of production. A 1.5 - 2 star (35%) rating is warranted.
