Orgy-Candyass

'Candyass' is the debut studio album by industrial/alternative rock band Orgy. It's hard to have very high hopes for an album when it has such a stunning title like 'Candyass', but when I saw this used for a few bucks I decided to give it a try. After listening it is industrial rock in the vein of Nine Inch Nails, albeit more dance-y.

The album begins with the very noisy 'Social Enemies' which has that Nine Inch Nails-esque electronic noise and distortion and nasal-y vocals from Jay Gordon. The first half of the album is very mediocre to be honest, but thankfully the album picks up a little bit with the second half. My favorite song on the album, 'Blue Monday', kicks off the second half. This song stands out the most because it has a really catchy beat, combining new wave-type music and metal in a surprisingly good mix. Gordon's vocals are really strong on this track, perfectly complimenting the 80's Rush-like synth work and heavy guitar. This 80's new wave feel is no surprise, seeing as it's a cover of the dance-rock hit from the band New Order. To be honest, the original is better, but Orgy still does a really good cover.

Overall, it's not a horrible album but nothing beyond 'Blue Monday' stand out to me. While I wouldn't say many of the songs are bad, there are quite a few that I would call mediocre. 'Blue Monday' shows me that Orgy's strong point is probably making dance-able industrial tracks rather than the edgy NIN-sound of most of the album. I recommend this to fans of Nine Inch Nails, and 'Blue Monday' would be a great song for a dance or something, but beyond that there isn't much special here. Hope you found this review helpful.
