UMUR
"Último acto" is the debut full-length studio album by Columbia, Medellin based death metal act Planta Cadaver. The album was released on cassette tape through Tribulación Productions in the fall of 1998. Planta Cadaver formed in 1994 and this is their first release. Some sources say that this is a demo release but featuring nine tracks and a total playing time of 40:21 minutes and being released through a label points in the direction of this being a studio album.
Although the album features a slightly thin sounding production, it´s still a professional studio production. Upon initial listens "Último acto" may sound like a lot of other brutal death metal/goregrind acts out there, but given more spins that turns out to be far from the truth. This is probably one of the most eclectic and varied brutal death metal releases I´ve yet encountered. It´s still brutal, intense, and brick heavy, featuring the obligatory unintelligible low growling (in Spanish), but there are also thrash metal riffs and rhythms here, brutal heavy grooves, some surprisingly melodic and very well performed lead guitar work (although sparse), and just a will to experiment with the genre that you won´t often hear. The only other act I can think of right now, which are as eclectic and adventurous with their brand of death metal/grindcore is Cephalic Carnage.
Upon conclusion this is definitely an interesting release. It´s brutal death metal for sure, but very different from what most people think of when they listen to brutal death metal. So this is for the adventure seeking brutal death metal listener. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
