Genre: melodic hard rock
Rage of Angels is a melodoc hard rock project evolving around Ten's original keyboard player, Ged Rylands, who provides most of the guitars on this album and the keyboards, of course, leaving the vocals and other instrumentation to hired hands.
Stylistically, we are dealing with AOR-tinged melodic hard rock, which is primarily riff-based, but there are occasional metal elements the pop up every now and then - most prominently in the instrumental 'Requiem for the Forgotten Soldier'. While rooted in hard rock riffs, the songs take on an epic feel every now and then, thanks to the prominent keyboards. Rather than tackling the vocals himself, Rylands has delegated the vocal duties to a range of revered metal and hard rock vocalists, such as Matti Alfonzetti, Ralf Sheepers, and Robert Hart.
Likewise, a host of guest guitarists, from as diverse acts as Tem Lover Under Cover and Obituary, appear on the album, delivering the guitar solos. Especially the above-mentioned instrumental offers a plethora of guitar solos.
While the music is undeniably high-quality hard rock, the production is a but unbalanced in that the keyboards, I think, are too dominant in comparison to the rhythm guitars, which dies disturb the listening experience a little bit.
In any case, fans of grandiose melodic hard rock should be very likely to enjoy Rage of Angels' "Dreamworld".
