Genre progressive doom metal
Hailing from Finland, Scapes recently released their debut album "One:Unseen:One" on Nihil Ultra.
Exploring the more melodic areas of doom metal, Scapes offer up tunes that capture the melancholy of Warning with the melody and accessibility of "Believe in Nothing"-era Paradise Lost. This is a combination that works very well, as you can hear in tracks like 'Caring Is Gone', 'The Melancholy Cycle', and 'Devi May Care'. The listener is treated to guitar melodies and harmonies as well as heavy riffage and slow drum beats, accompanied by an introvert and almost vocal style. Adding a progressive dynamism, the doomy parts co-occur with acoustic passages seemingly inspired by Opeth.
The production is crystal clear and well-defined. There is no rawness, but that would not work with this type of doom metal anyway. The musicianship and the songwriting skills documented on this album are top notch.
"One:Unseen:One" is a successful melodic progressive doom metal debut by a band that has much potential. Fans of Paradise Lost, The Gathering, Warning, Sorrows Path, and probably also Opeth should find this album quite attractive.
