Scorpions-Best of Rockers 'N' Ballads
'Best of Rockers 'N' Ballads' is a compilation album by heavy metal/hard rock band Scorpions released in 1989. Scorpions are one of the early heavy metal bands and had a large amount of albums by 1989. So with an already big discography, you would think it would be easy to make a great compilation album, but sadly this compilation isn't that great of a compilation.
This was actually my introduction to Scorpions, I bought this used at my local record store after hearing 'Rock You Like a Hurricane' on the radio probably about 7 years ago. So originally knowing next to nothing about the band, this seemed like a good compilation. Included are of course the hits like the aforementioned 'Rock You Like a Hurricane', which has been a long time classic rock radio staple, 'No One Like You', and the power ballad 'Still Loving You'. Also included are a couple of my favorite Scorpions songs like 'The Zoo' and 'Blackout'. It wasn't until 3 years later when I heard Helstar's great cover of Scorpions's 'He's a Woman, She's a Man', that I became acquainted with Scorpions's earlier material and their album 'Taken By Force' quickly became my favorite album of theirs.
So as you probably could tell, that's where this compilation falls flat. It doesn't include any of the band's pre-Lovedrive material. While I do love Scorpions's 80's stuff as well as their 70's output, when making a best-of compilation you can't just skip a decade of the band's work unless of course you call it "Scorpions, the 80's" or 'Scorpions, the early years'. So Overall, this is a nice collection of songs for someone who only enjoys their 80's output, but as an introduction to the band or someone who enjoys both decades, this is not a good compilation to get. Hope you found this review helpful.
