"Haunted" is the debut full-length studio album by US death metal act Six Feet Under. The album was released through Metal Blade Records in September 1995. Six Feet Under was initially formed as a side-project by Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes and Obituary guitarist Allen West, but became a full-time act for Barnes after his split from Cannibal Corpse. The lineup on "Haunted" also features Terry Butler (Death, Massacre) on bass and Greg Gall on drums.
The music on the album is more or less the epitome of old school US death metal, which isn´t that surprising considering the musicians involved. There is a pretty strong connection to Obituary because of how the riffs are constructed. Simple, groove laden, and brutal. Chris Barnes delivers a convincing and intelligible growling vocal performance and the rhythm section play heavy and mid-paced brutal beats.
And that is pretty much it. There isn´t much variation to be found (a few solos, very few tempo changes, and generally pretty formulaic song structures) and "Haunted" does become a rather one-dimensional affair after only a couple of tracks. There is a great charm about the primitive nature of the whole thing though and while it´s not the most revolutionizing (nor the most interesting) old school death metal album out there, it´s still well played, well produced (recorded at Morrisound Studios) and relatively well written, and a 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
