UMUR
"Cancun Deathride" is an EP release by Swedish death metal act The Cleaner and Mr. Filth's Van Murders. The EP was independently released in December 2018. The Cleaner and Mr. Filth's Van Murders is a one-man band consisting of prolific Swedish death metal musician Rogga Johansson. Johansson is involved in a large number of different death metal projects, and his release schedule is arguably one of the most busy on the scene (often releasing dosens of albums with different projects each year). The Cleaner and Mr. Filth's Van Murders is a project born out of the interest to tell more stories about the two murderes (The Cleaner and Mr. Filth) Johansson first sang about on "The Van Murders" (April 2011, Vic Records) album from his Ribspreader project.
Stylistically this is old school Swedish death metal and you´ll find very few surprises here, if you´re familiar with the style and especially Johansson´s predominantly mid-paced heavy take on the genre. Johansson adds some nice melodic leads/harmonies to spice things up, and "Cancun Deathride" is actually one of his more inspired works. It´s well produced too and since Johansson is credited for playing and singing everything on the EP, and he doesn´t usually play the drums, I´m assuming the drums are programmed, and if that´s the case, he has done a fine job here. It´s not that the drums are particularly interesting, but they fit the remaining parts of the music and in any case it´s the fat brutal guitar riffs and the brutal growling vocals which are in focus most of the time. I find myself well entertained and definitely banging my head...so I guess mission accomplished is a fair evaluation of this four-track EP debut release from The Cleaner and Mr. Filth's Van Murders. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is deserved.
