UMUR
"....Revenge" is the second demo release by Swedish death metal act Unleashed. The demo was independently released on cassette tape in October 1990. It´s the band´s second 1990 demo as they released "The Utter Dark" demo in May 1990. Unleashed was formed in 1989 after Nihilist disbanded. Bassist (later lead vocalist) Johnny Hedlund was not invited to join Entombed, which was formed one week after by the other members of Nihilist. In fact disbanding Nihilist and forming Entombed, was their way of getting rid of Hedlund instead of just telling him, that he was fired. Hedlund soon after formed Unleashed and recruited drummer Anders Schultz and guitarist Fredrik Lindgren, who were both part of the local Stockholm death metal scene, and to complete the lineup former Dismember frontman/guitarist Robert Sennebäck. The mentioned lineup recorded both "The Utter Dark" demo and this demo.
Stylistically the 3 tracks on the 12:35 minutes long demo continue the old school Swedish death metal style initiated on "The Utter Dark" demo. The sound productions on the two demos are also relatively similar (this one being maybe slightly more raw) which isn´t that surprising as both were recorded at Kuben Studios in Stockholm. "Unleashed" and "Where Life Ends" were re-recorded and included on Unleashed´s debut full-length studio album "Where No Life Dwells" (May 1991, Century Media Records), while "The Utterdark Revenge" is exclusive to this demo.
The sound production is raw and powerful, but considering that this is a demo, the sound production is actually pretty well sounding for the time. "....Revenge" wasn´t a demo which showed great development from "The Utter Dark", but it showed that Unleashed were consistent in what they did and soon after Century Media Records bid the hook. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
