"Necrolust" is the second demo recording by Polish death metal act Vader. The demo was independently released in March 1989. Vader formed in 1983 and released the "Live in Decay" live demo in December 1986, but the original incarnation of the band split-up on 1988 and guitarist Piotr Paweł Wiwczarek was as the only remaining member responsible for assembling a new lineup. He took on the vocal duties in addition to his guitarist role, and added bassist Jacek Kalisz and drummer Krzysztof "Doc" Raczkowski to the ranks, and the trio lineup recorded the four tracks featured on "Necrolust".
Although I wouldn´t call the music on "Necrolust" 100% death metal, as it´s still highly influenced by the most aggressive and savage sounding thrash metal releases by artists like Sodom and Kreator (and maybe some of the South American acts in the same vein), I´d add Morbid Angel to the influence equation at this point, so there´s an added layer of extremity here and it´s the first signs from Vader of their future thrash/death metal hybrid style.
"Necrolust" features a well sounding demo quality production. It´s detailed, clear, and all instruments and vocals are clearly audible in the mix. A bit more bottom could have added some heaviness to the demo, but it´s a minor issue, and "Necrolust" sounds pretty great as it is. As a listener you´re pummeled by the band´s high energy and aggression, and that´s exactly the experience I´m was looking for from Vader. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.
