What I really like about a label like Season of Mist is the diversity of their roster of artists. A logical consequence of such a varied roster is of course that every now and then there will be artists and releases that simply do not appeal that much to my personal taste in music. This is the case of the latest album by the German metalcore act War From A Harlots Mouth.
Although this is not really music that appeals that much to me, I can still hear that the Germans got something going on that fans of metalcore are bound to love. The music on "Voyeur" belongs to the more avant-garde and less poppy end of the metalcore-continuum, and that in itself is something that I appreciate. Instead, the music is full of blastbeats and dissonant chords as well as odd time metered figures (and the occasional djent-section). Every song contains a plethora of changes, and the music often comes across mind-bogglingly complex. These musicians definition got the chops, and even to my unappreciative ears it is obvious that we are dealing with challenging quality music.
Still, the music eventually, despite all the twists and turns, ends up seeming monotonous to me because of the lack of melody (in all fairness, there are some melodic elements) and guitar solos and the like. But, like I said, that is just my own personal taste.
Fans of tech metalcore should definitely check out War From A Harlots Mouth's latest effort - chances are you'll like it.
