"A kid Hereafter In The Grinding Light" is the self-titled debut full-length studio album by Danish avant garde grindcore/screamo act A kid Hereafter In The Grinding Light. The album was released in February 2008 by Drug(s) Records. A kid Hereafter In The Grinding Light is actually a side-project by the members of the indie pop act A Kid Hereafter. A rather unusual move for a pop group to record a grindcore album.
While the music on the 30 track, 31:40 minute long album is rooted in grindcore, it´s not your usual run of the mill grindcore album. First off the vocals belong more in the screamo vocal style than anything (there are death grunts on the album too though) and it´s safe to say that the album is also rather avant garde, with strange twists and turns. The musicianship are on a very high level and the production is powerful and professional sounding too. In those regards this is a very high quality album.
But with that said, the tracks are simply all over the place and the avant garde elements and the screamo type vocals end up being a trial rather than a challenge. Personally I found myself gritting my teeth and reaching for the Aspirin by the time the album was over. More dedicated fans of busy avant garde grindcore might disagree with me but in my opinion a 2 star (40%) rating is warranted.
