UMUR
"Terminal Velocity" is an EP release by US death metal act Amputation Spree. The EP was self-released in June 2011. "Terminal Velocity" is a 4 track, 13:05 minutes long affair. Amputation Spree is a one-man project consisting of Spencer Van Dyk who handles all instruments and vocals.
Calling the music on the EP death metal in the conventional sense of the word is not doing the music justice. There´s a twisted avant garde sensibility to the project that suits Spencer Van Dyk and his music well. The atmosphere is thick, filthy and dark. The growling vocals are loud and unintelligible. They suit the music and the obscure atmosphere very well. You won´t find many out an out catchy headbanger riffs on the EP, instead you are treated to heavy, twisted and at times dissonant riffs, epic keyboards and those loud growling vocals that work almost like an extra instrument.
The sound production is muffled, dark and it´s not always obvious what´s going on, but the muddy sound production and the obscure music go well together. "Terminal Velocity" is a very interesting EP release by Amputation Spree and considering the fact that Spencer Van Dyk has released the EP as a "name your price" release, the quality of the release is really high. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
