"Counter Hegemony" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Indonesian, Bali based death metal/grindcore act Antipop. The album was self-released in October 2012 and is available for free download. Antipop was formed in 2001 and released a couple of EPs before releasing their debut full-length studio album "Freedom in Papua" in 2008.
While "Counter Hegemony" is considered a full-length studio album, it´s one of the shortest full-lengths I´ve yet encountered. 11 tracks distributed over a 11:12 minutes long playing time and that´s it. This is an "in your face" brutal assault that is over before you know it. Antipop are thankfully skilled enough to leave an impact. They are decent musicians and "Counter Hegemony" are relatively well produced too, which in my world are about the minimun requirement for listening pleasure. The tracks are also varied enough featuring both blasting grindcore sections and more groove based brutal death metal sections. The deep growling vocals are convincing and delivered with passion.
So upon conclusion "Counter Hegemony" is a pretty great release by Antipop. It´s not exactly original sounding, but it´s effective and powerful sounding, which are also positives that the band deserves praise for. A 3 - 3.5 (65%) rating is deserved.
