AUTUMN LEAVES picture
A melodic death metal band formed in 1993. They were originally named Decrial in 1992. The first album, Embraced by the Absolute, was more of a death metal album while the second, As Night Conquers Day, was more melodic. They split up in 2001.

"As Night Conquers Day" is the second full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Autumn Leaves. The album was released through Serious Entertainment in early 1999. It´s the successor to "Embraced by the Absolute" from 1997. It would be the band´s last album before disbanding in 2001. Some of the members subsequently formed The Arcane Order.

Stylistically "As Night Conquers Day" continues the melodic death metal style with blackened vocals, which was introduced on "Embraced by the Absolute (1997)". It´s highly melodic death metal with loads of guitar leads, solos, and harmonies, but I wouldn´t call it 100% melodeath. The music on "As Night Conquers Day" has as much in common with the blackened melodic death metal of Swedish artists like Unanimated, Necrophobic, and Dissection, as it has to artists like Dark Tranquillity and In Flames. But the scale tips both ways.

Autumn Leaves are a well playing unit, and everything is delivered with tight precision, but still with the right organic touch. Lead vocalist Torsten Madsen has a powerful voice and a commanding delivery. Sometimes delivering death metal growling, and other times delivering higher pitched blackened snarling. The material on the album are well written and effective and as "As Night Conquers Day" also features a raw, detailed, and powerful sounding production job, it´s a quality release on all parameters. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

AUTUMN LEAVES Embraced by the Absolute

"Embraced by the Absolute" is the debut full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Autumn Leaves. The album was released through Serious Entertainment in 1997. Autumn Leaves were active from 1993 to 2001 and released a demo and two full-length studio albums in that period. When the band split-up, some of the members went on to form Scavenger, which later changed their name to The Arcane Order.

The music on "Embraced by the Absolute" more or less continues the old school, yet technically well played, death metal style with melodic leanings which was initiated on the "Hope Springs Eternal (1995)" demo. The 4 tracks from the demo are also included on "Embraced by the Absolute" in re-recorded versions and the lineup hasn´t changed either, which are also contributing factors to the continuation of the musical style from the demo.

While the music features the right morbid old school feeling, Autumn Leaves successfully incorporate contemporary groove elements, tempo changes (short section blasting, mid-paced heavy grooves, faster tremolo picking sections, and brutal doomy parts), and occasional soaring melodies to the tracks, which ultimately make "Embraced by the Absolute" more than just another derivative old school sounding death metal release recorded after the early 90s heyday of death metal. There´s a hint of a blackened element in there too when the vocals are raspy shrieks, instead of the otherwise predominantly deep intelligible growling vocals on the album, but it´s a minor stylistic element and "Embraced by the Absolute" is other than that through and through a death metal album.

The material are well written although it´s not always memorable beyond while it´s playing, but that´s not a major issue on most death metal releases, and for the most part the music on the album is both instantly catchy and relatively memorable in the long run. The high level musicianship is a great asset and the sound production is also both raw, powerful, and overall pretty strong, so "Embraced by the Absolute" is in many ways a quality release by Autumn Leaves. They aren´t that original sounding though and while it´s not a major issue, it is in that department that the album could have been more interesting. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

AUTUMN LEAVES Hope Springs Eternal

Demo · 1995 · Death Metal

"Hope Springs Eternal" is the first demo by Danish death metal act Autumn Leaves. The demo was independently releasedon cassette tape in 1995 and ended up selling more than 1000 copies. Autumn Leaves were active from 1993 to 2001 and released this demo and two full-length studio albums in that period. When the band split-up, some of the members went on to form Scavenger, which later changed their name to The Arcane Order.

Autumn Leaves are mostly known as a melodic death metal act, but on "Hope Springs Eternal" they play a slightly more raw death metal style although it´s still fairly melodic. While Autumn Leaves don´t exactly sound like (early) Necrophobic, I will still make the reference, because of the aggressive growling vocals and raw yet melodic way of playing death metal. Autumn Leaves are not as demonic and old school sounding as Necrophobic though and the music on "Hope Springs Eternal" features some groove laden parts, that would never have found their way into the Swede´s material.

"Hope Springs Eternal" features 4 tracks and a full playing time of 17:55 minutes. The first three tracks on the demo are mid- to fast paced melodic tinged death metal tracks, but on the closing track "Weakening Trips" the band introduce a melodic doom/death sound that wasn´t necessarily in the cards after listening to the opening trio of tracks. It´s still the sound of the same band playing though and it´s pretty great for the variation that Autumn Leaves are also able to pull off playing that style in the context of their musical soundscape.

The material are generally of a high quality and it´s certainly not obvious that this is a debut demo. The same can be said about the sound production, which is very close to sounding like a professional studio production. Raw and powerful sounding, yet clear enough to hear every instrument and vocal track in the mix. The musicanship is also on a high level, and all in all "Hope Springs Eternal" is a very convincing first release by Autumn Leaves. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
