"Huayra" is the debut full-length studio album by Colombia, Bogotá based thrash/death metal act Ayahuasca. The album was independently released in September 2016. Ayahuasca was formed in 2008 and they released the "Madre Coca" demo in 2009, followed by the "Chamám Jaguar" EP in 2011. The name Ayahuasca derives from a South American plant mixture used by shamans to enduce spiritual visions (in reality it´s an organic psychedelic drug producing similar effects to what you experience when ingesting LSD).
In keeping with the band name the lyrical themes on "Huayra" revolves around South American native traditions, rites, and myths. All lyrics are in the Spanish language. Stylistically the music features the occasional nod towards South American native music, but the dominant core style is pretty brutal thrash metal, which at times enter death metal territory. Sepultura is an obvious reference, but Ayahuasca are generally a bit more eclectic, and it´s only how they mix the elements which reminds me of the more prolific Brazilians than the actual music.
"Huayra" is fairly well produced and Ayahuasca are a well playing band too, so when those elements are paired with songwriting which is interesting and occasionally really raw and powerful, the conclusion is that "Huayra" is a rather intriguing release and a promising debut album by Ayahuasca. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
