Beneath the Massacre is a Brutal/ Technical Death Metal band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

It was formed in the summer of 2004, including as members in their line-up the vocalist Elliot Desgagnés, guitarist Christopher Bradley, bassist Dennis Bradley, guitarist Jonathan Dubeau and drummer Justin Rousselle. In May 2005, they released a five-track EP Evidence of Inequity through the Canadian label Galy Records, the EP was produced by Yannick St-Amand and mastered by Alan Douches. Beneath the Massacre announces a Canadian tour to promote this album in September 2005 supporting Neuraxis, but have been forced to cancel due an accident with their van outside Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Must admit to never having come across Beneath The Massacre before. Fearmonger is the fourth album from these Canadian technical death metallers. It’s a sub-genre where I have my favourites like Nile and Death but a lot of it can leave me cold despite the obvious virtuosic musicianship on show which I do enjoy.

Beneath The Massacre fall into the category of bands I admire rather than love, though there’s songs where I did enjoy it. It’s pretty much as I was expecting - Fantastic musicianship, drums that are a blur of blast beats and lightning speed double kicks and fills. Guitar parts that are for the most part a blur of notes and vocals that are of the deep guttural growl variety. Beneath The Massacre do this stuff as well as most bands of their ilk but also suffer from the lack of memorable songs where technique takes precedence over a great riff that I often find with the sub-genre. None of the songs outstay their welcome though with most around the three minute mark or less and with a total running time of just under thirty minutes it’s the perfect length. They do slow things down occasionally and when they do it’s very welcome and they can get quite inventive with it locking into a less complex syncopated groove for a while. The guitar solos are also impressive, even adding a touch of melody here and there. With death metal I generally prefer the production dirtier and on the organic side. Here as is common with this sort of stuff, it’s very clinical but nevertheless clear and powerful.

If this is your type of thing then I can recommend you check Fearmonger out, you may well love it. I warmed to it myself with a few plays and they really nail it at times, favourites probably being Treacherous and Tarnished Legacy which closes the album in fine style capturing them at their most inventive. For myself I’d probably rate it three stars but within the confines of the sub-genre they don’t do much wrong so it’s 3 and half.

Amazing. One of the best "Ep" I've heard in my life. If an "EP" sound has that power, what about an entire album? "Justin Rousselle" destroys everything with his technique brutally awesome, nothing stays the same after this incredible drummer initiates the destruction. "Christopher Bradley" is another monster, full of brutality and technique in all the strings of his guitar. "Dennis Bradley" is fast with his bass and detail, do not use pick. I watched some videos of the band and I could prove it. Praise also to the singer "Elliot Desgagnés" who spare no voice, no breath.

"Comforting Prejudice" is the shortest of the "Ep." The letter is a criticism to Christianity. The contradiction of preaching "Love and compassion" but missionaries have bloody missions. It is matter of opinion. Musically speaking is the junction brutality carried out in accordance with the best possible way.

"Profitable Killcount" is more a criticism that involves religion, war and economics. It is readily apparent that "Justin Rousselle" is not limited in its instrument. It uses all parts of his drum. The voice of "Elliot Desgagnés" is not very clear about what he sings, is not so easy to understand, but very few actually bother to understand.

"Totalitarian Hypnosis" brings a criticism directed at the TV about his power of alienation. In general it is more "broken" than the other tracks but without losing the offensive power.

"Regurgitated Lullaby for the Born Dead" is mass destruction. Merciless riffs, a terrifying aggression on all instruments. It is the best track in "Ep." Here is also where most realize the technical drummer "Justin Rousselle," that without disparaging the other members, it is the high point of "Ep." "Awake the born dead..."

"Nevermore" quits "Ep" with a powerful critique of the vicious circle that surrounds the society. "Work more, faster, the show must go on it. Work more, Spend more. Happiness is one purchase away. We live our lives like if our condition would be just a phase" This letter is a slap in the face. "Happiness can not be bought." The sound is a punch in the stomach. Hearing mandatory for anyone.
