"Homicidal Therapy" is the second full-length studio album by Belgian death metal act Bleedskin. The album was independently released in September 2024. It´s the successor to "Blood Reign" from 2020. There have been a couple of lineup changes since the predecessor as only Céline Mazay (guitars, vocals) and Rémy Adam (bass, vocals) remain from the lineup who recorded the predecessor. New in the lineup is drummer/vocalist Logan Dykens, who completes the new trio lineup on "Homicidal Therapy".

Stylistically not much has changed since the debut album, as Bleedskin are still delivering technically well played US influenced death metal. Although they are not a US band, the Dutch in Sinister (who themselves have always been US death metal influenced) are probably the most valid reference. It´s relatively brutal death metal but in the old school fashion with ties to the late 80s brutal thrash metal scene. So Bleedskin are far from being another Suffocation clone, if the word brutal old school death metal should lead you to think that. A band like Deicide is probably a better old school US death metal reference (and to a lesser extent Cannibal Corpse).

Featuring 10 tracks and a total playing time of 30:44 minutes "Homicidal Therapy" is a relatively short release, but what it lacks in length it offers in effective quality death metal songwriting, strong and tight (yet still organic) musical performances, and a powerful, brutal, and raw sounding production, which perfectly suits the material. The snare drum has an odd sound, but personally I appreciate the way it sounds, as it adds a unique character to Bleedskin´s sound. So while Bleedskin won´t surprise you with anything you haven´t heard before on similar releases, they are the type of band who bring the goods. Power, passion, brutality... you get it all here and it´s delivered with the right amount of caustic aggression and conviction. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.

"The Rotten One" is an EP release by Belgian death metal act BleedSkin. The EP was independently released in April 2018. BleedSkin formed in 2016 and "The Rotten One" is their debut release.

BleedSkin play a brutal and raw type of death metal but still with an intention to create something memorable. It´s brutal, punchy, and aggressive death metal, but the tracks are composed with at least a degree of catchiness to them. To my ears the songwriting is actually relatively mature considering that this is the band´s first release. The band are well playing and although the growling vocals aren´t the most unique or well sounding, they get the job done.

The recording quality isn´t up to par with what most listeners will expect from a professional studio recording, and "The Rotten One" should probably have been labelled a demo rather than an EP release, and the quality would have better fit the expectations. It´s not a lo-fi recording, but it´s pretty raw and rough around the edges. Featuring 5 tracks and a total playing time of 20:02 it´s a good length release to get introduced to BleedSkin´s take on death metal, and although they would improve greatly on their 2020 debut album "Blood Reign", "The Rotten One" is still a decent first release by the band. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.

BLEEDSKIN Blood Reign

"Blood Reign" is the debut full-length studio album by Belgian death metal act BleedSkin. The album was independently released in October 2020. BleedSkin formed in 2016 and released "The Rotten One" EP in 2018. The band recorded "Blood Reign" as a five-piece, but lead guitarist Benjamin Lefèvre has since left.

Stylistically BleedSkin deliver a relatively brutal and technically well played type of US influenced death metal. They are a very well playing unit and female lead vocalist Anouk Debecq has a snarling malicious sounding growling delivery, which reminds me a little of Ross Dolan from Immolation (and that´s definitely not a bad quality). The material are very intense, aggressive, and loaded with tempo changes, breaks, and a good balance between fast sections and mid-paced heavy grooves. It´s not the most original sounding release, but there is enough passion and conviction here to tilt an elephant, and those are redeeming qualities which make it less important that this may not be the most unique death metal album you´ve ever heard.

"Blood Reign" features a well sounding and powerful production which suits the material well. The drums could maybe have prospered from a slightly more organic sound and the guitars could also have been a little more defined in the mix, as the fast notes sometimes blur and the riffs become less sharp. These are minor issues with the sound production though, and to most ears they won´t even be issues, so overall the sound production is of a good quality.

Upon conclusion it´s not often I pick up a release from a band completely unknown to me (and a debut album no less), where I get that "hell yeah, this is the real deal" feeling when I listen to it. These guys (and girls) have managed just that and "Blood Reign" is in many ways an impressive and very promising debut album. As mentioned above it´s not a perfect release and there is room for improvement in terms of creating a more unique sound, but this album is still overall a killer release. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.
