Fun But Completely Unoriginal Van Halen Knock-Off
The Bulletboys were part of a triple bill of the first rock concert I went to back in early 1989. Their debut album is formula glam played with plenty of attitude and energy. But there is absolutely nothing original or even musically interesting here. While the band was clearly modelled after Van Halen, the guitars don't even get to AC/DC level. The straight rock grooves are solid, and Marq Torien's voice is greasy and cocksure.
Songs like "Smooth Up In Ya," "Kissin' Kitty," and "Hard as a Rock" are about as subtle as a bowling ball but for a T&A obsessed teenage guy, they certainly are great hooks. The cover of "For the Love of Money" is a nice funky break in the action.
Live the band was fun and energetic, just as expected.
Bottom Line: Typical late 80's party glam.
