CAVALERA CONSPIRACY picture
Cavalera Conspiracy is a Brazilian Thrash/groove metal act formed in 2007 by Igor and Max Cavalera. Both formerly of Sepultura fame. Cavalera Conspiracy marks the reunion of the Cavalera brothers after 12 years. The brothers fell out with each other in December 1996. A fall out that resulted in Max leaving Sepultura and forming Soulfly. Cavalera Conspiracy released their debut full-length studio album "Inflikted" in March 2008.

In 2023 the Cavalera brothers used the name CAVALERA to re-record and re-release the early SEPULTURA releases.

"Pandemonium" is the third full-length studio album by Brazilian thrash/groove metal act Cavalera Conspiracy. The album was released through Napalm Records in October 2014. It´s the successor to "Blunt Force Trauma" from 2011 and features one lineup change since the predecessor as bassist Johny Chow (Stone Sour) has been replaced by Nate Newton (The Ocean Collective, Doomriders, Old Man Gloom). The usual suspects are Max Cavalera on guitars and lead vocals, Igor Cavalera on drums and percussion, and Marc Rizzo on guitars.

Stylistically "Pandemonium" leans a bit more towards the thrash metal past of the Cavalera brothers than the two previous releases, but still features a lot of heavy grooves and the occasional ethnic trial music moment (although it´s mostly the limited edition bonus track "Porra" which falls into that catagory). "Pandemonium" features quite a few fast-paced thrashy sections and the distinct sounding shouting raw vocals of Max Cavalera and it´s generally a highly energetic, heavy, and aggressive album. The lead guitar work of Rizzo is of high class and his playing is both varied and intriguing.

The opening track "Babylonian Pandemonium" is one of the highlights of the album, but "Pandemonium" is generally a well written and effective release. The sound production is professional, raw, and detailed, and the musicianship is top notch. So on most parameters "Pandemonium" is a good quality release. There are elements which aren´t as great as others though, and I´d mention some of the thrashy riffs, which do sound a little uninspired (especially compared to what the brothers produced on the late 80s/early 90s thrash metal releases by Sepultura) and the idea to often put distorting effects on Max Cavalera´s voice. It doesn´t sound great and contributes to "Pandemonium" being an album I seldom return to. With the talent involved in the creation of "Pandemonium", I just think I expect more. Still a 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

"Blunt Force Trauma" is the second full-length studio album by Brazilian thrash/groove metal act Cavalera Conspiracy. The album was released through Roadrunner Records in March 2011. It´s the successor to "Inflikted" from 2007 and features Max Cavalera on guitars and lead vocals, Igor Cavalera on drums and percussion, Marc Rizzo on guitars, and Johny Chow on bass. The two former are of course known as founders of Sepultura. Rizzo is probably best known for playing with another Max Cavalera-fronted act in Soulfly, and Chow would subsequently go on to play bass in Stone Sour. Roger Miret from Agnostic Front guests on "Lynch Mob".

Stylistically the material on "Blunt Force Trauma" is a natural continuation of the thrash/groove metal style of "Inflikted". Aggressive shouted vocals, both heavy and faster paced riffs and rhythms, and a good balance between thrash metal and groove metal elements. Cavalera Conspiracy are a well playing unit, and it´s obvious that these guys are veterans of the scene in terms of skills and professionalism. The material is well composed, powerful, and effectful too, although it´s nothing groundbreaking. As the album also features a well sounding production, "Blunt Force Trauma" is upon conclusion another quality release by Cavalera Conspiracy. I could have wished for more focus on more memorable songwriting and catchy moments, but this is still a quality release through and through. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY Schizophrenia

"Schizophrenia" is a full-length studio album release by Brazilian death/thrash metal act Cavalera. The album was released through Nuclear Blast in June 2024. It´s a full re-recording of Sepultura´s October 1987 sophomore full-length studio album "Schizophrenia" plus the new original track "Nightmares of Delirium", which closes the album. Normally when the Cavalera brothers work together, they work under the Cavalera Conspiracy monicker (who have released four full-length studio albums), but they opted to release a re-recorded version of Sepultura´s November 1986 "Morbid Visions" debut full-length studio album in July 2023 under the shortened Cavalera name. The Cavalera brothers also re-recorded Sepultura´s December 1985 "Bestial Devastation" EP (or more correctly Sepultura´s part of the "Bestial Devastation / Século XX" split with Overdose). The re-recorded EP was released on the same day the the re-recorded "Morbid Visions" album. Apparently they were so satisfied with the re-recording process that they have now also opted to re-record "Schizophrenia".

The early Sepultura recordings were raw, savage, and unpolished, which are usually descriptors I would praise, but in the case of the early Sepultura recordings I always felt that something was missing, so I´m one of those who think it´s a pretty good idea to release these re-recordings (and I´m usually very much in opposition when artists do re-recordings of full releases). In the case of "Schizophrenia" it´s interesting suddenly to be able to hear all the details of the riffs and drumming, which were buried in the original mess of a sound production. The Cavalera brothers have however not destroyed the album by packing it in a polished and overproduced sound production. They have respect for the original recording, so this is still a pretty raw and hard hitting sound.

"Schizophrenia" features several powerful, fast-paced, and technically well played thrash metal tracks, and it becomes more obvious when listening to the re-recorded version of the album, that Sepultura were actually closer to the sound they would achieve on "Beneath the Remains" (1989), than what the original recording revealed. Upon conclusion this re-recording of "Schizophrenia" will divide the waters as all re-recordings do, but as written above I´m pretty satisfied with the result, and I think a 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

CAVALERA CONSPIRACY Morbid Visions

"Morbid Visions" is a full-length studio album release by Brazilian death/thrash metal act Cavalera. The album was released through Nuclear Blast in July 2023. It´s a full re-recording of Sepultura´s November 1986 debut full-length studio album "Morbid Visions" plus the new original track "Burn the Dead", which closes the album. Normally when the Cavalera brothers work together, they work under the Cavalera Conspiracy monicker (who have released four full-length studio albums before this one), but they opted to release the re-recorded version of "Morbid Visions" under the shortened Cavalera name. The Cavalera brothers also opted to re-record Sepultura´s December 1985 "Bestial Devastation" EP (or more correctly Sepultura´s part of the "Bestial Devastation / Século XX" split with Overdose). The re-recorded EP was released on the same day the the re-recorded "Morbid Visions" album.

While the re-recording of the "Bestial Devastation" EP was maybe a bit redundant as the original is almost perfect as it is, the Cavalera brothers still made a respectful re-recording and the 2023 version of the EP is well worth a listen. Personally I always found the original version of "Morbid Visions" a bit harder to appreciate than "Bestial Devastation" as the original album features a sloppy and unpleasant sounding production job, and therefore this re-recording was something I looked forward to.

The differences between the original recording and this 2023 version are many and apparent. The playing is sharper, you can make out all riffs and rhythms, and the sound production is detailed and defined. I understand many fans prefer the original and almost regard this as a blasphemous attempt to cash in on the enduring popularity of the early Sepultura releases, but to my ears the Cavalera brothers manage to keep things respectful and they´ve even opted for a raw and organic sounding production, which suits the material well. This is not a lifeless, sterile, and clean sounding production job, like one could have feared from a 2023 recording.

I think it´s audible that the Cavalera brothers had fun while they made these re-recordings, but at the same time they´ve obviously spend a lot of time researching and deciding which pedals, tones, and drum tunings they wanted to use, and once again they´ve shown their class and professionalism, but also their unending passion for their material and the legacy of their art. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

"Bestial Devastation" is an EP release by Brazilian death/thrash metal act Cavalera. The EP was released through Nuclear Blast in July 2023. It´s a full re-recording of Sepultura´s December 1985 "Bestial Devastation" EP (or more correctly Sepultura´s part of the "Bestial Devastation / Século XX" split with Overdose) plus the new original track "Sexta Feira 13", which closes the album. Normally when the Cavalera brothers work together, they work under the Cavalera Conspiracy monicker (who have released four full-length studio albums up until 2023), but they opted to release the re-recorded version of "Bestial Devastation" under the shortened Cavalera name. The Cavalera brothers also opted to re-record Sepultura´s November 1986 "Morbid Visions" debut full-length studio album. The re-recorded album was released on the same day the the re-recorded "Bestial Devastation" EP.

There´s always danger when you re-recorded iconic releases, and it´s no less controversial just because you were the ones who recorded the original release. To my ears the Cavalera brothers has however done a pretty great job here, and the re-recorded death/thrashy tracks sound a little sharper and of course features a more well defined sound production. They´ve managed to still maintain an organic edge and they haven´t opted for a clean and sterile sound production, so there´s still authenticity left in these recordings. "Sexta Feira 13" makes a good addition to the original material as it´s much in the same style.

So upon conclusion I´m pleasantly surprised that this re-recording works well and is worth a listen. Of course nothing beats the savagery and youthful aggression of the original recordings, but this is in all ways a respectful re-recording. A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.
