"Black Dawn" is a demo recording by Swedish death metal act Corpse. The demo was independently released in 1987. It´s the only official release by Corpse (from their short original run), as they changed their name to Grave in 1988 and onwards opted to solely record and release under that monicker.
"Black Dawn" features three tracks and a total playing time of 10:59 minutes. Stylistically the music is brutal thrash or an early attempt at playing death metal influenced thrash. In those days the death metal label had not been invented, so back then it was probably just considered really brutal thrash metal (today we would probably label it death/thrash). The vocals aren´t really growls either, but more a raw barking snarl. As far as I know "Life in Disgrace" and "Rise Again" are exclusive to this release, but "Black Dawn" was re-recorded and included on the 1993 "...And Here I Die...Satisfied" EP (mini-album).
Corpse are a well playing unit already this early on (fast-paced thrash metal riffs and rhytms, and screaming chromatic leads), and the demo also features a pretty good quality sound production (considering that it´s a demo from 1987). There´s little groundbreaking here, and listening to this demo you wouldn´t necessarily have guessed that only a few years down the line Grave would be one of the originators of the Swedish death metal sound. A 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
