Crimson Moon is a black metal band formed in 1994 in San Diego, California, by Scorpios Androctonus (known also from Sabnack and Possession Ritual among others).

The band's debut album, To Embrace the Vampyric Blood, was released in 1996, followed by Under the Serpentine Spell in 1999. It wasn't until 2007 when Crimson Moon released new material, on the EP named The Serpent Beneath the Skin.

At one time Scorpios and another band member Nocturnal Overlord split apart with both men claiming ownership of the band. Nocturnal Overlord eventually started another band called Abyssmal Nocturne though he has since abandoned that project.

Just 5 months after the release of their incredibly weak debut demo, Crimson Moon already showed some very noticeable improvement with Into the Nocturnal Forest. There has been a major change in the lineup, as Crimson Moon is no longer a one-man-act here. Scorpios has teamed up with Overlord, and it seems that this additional member has allowed for great improvement in Crimson Moon's sound. Into the Nocturnal Forest can't compete with Crimson Moon's full-length albums, but it shows potential and talent; two things that were severely lacking on the debut demo. Fans of old school black metal may find interest in this, but I can't say that I'm really blown away by Into the Nocturnal Forest. This is a collector's item only, but considering that I hesitate in saying that about their debut, it's a definite improvement. Though Crimson Moon still had to work out the kinks and develop their sound a bit further, this is a decent demo that should appeal to some black metal fans.

The music here is the same as it was on Crimson Moon's debut demo - raw, unpolished, old school black metal. This time around they've added some more keyboards into the mix, as well as some softer and more melodic sections. Something like the outro to "Nocturnity" or the haunting "Vengeance of the Dragon: The Communion (Outro)" accurately represents the more eclectic sound that Crimson Moon has developed this time around. Into the Nocturnal Forest still suffers from the same flaws that plagued their debut demo, but they are (fortunately) in a much better state. Although the production is still less than desirable and the programmed drums are uninspired and lifeless, neither of these aspects are in as much of a sorry state as they were on the debut. I can hear all of the instruments well, the playing is much tighter, and the final product is all-around more enjoyable. At under 15 minutes, Into the Nocturnal Forest is a short demo, but it works fairly well. There's enough variation that you don't feel gypped out of material, but it's not too long either. Like its predecessor, a longer amount of music in this vein could easily get tedious.

Into the Nocturnal Forest is an improvement for Crimson Moon, but it's clear that they still were far from their peak. Most black metal fans can easily skip the first two Crimson Moon demos and dive right into the full-lengths. If a die-hard fan of the band wants to experience a Crimson Moon demo, this is definitely the one to get. Since this is still just a collector's item only, the most I can give is a generous 2 stars. This is a very flawed demo, but it shows some progress for this American black metal act.

Oh boy, where to begin... For anyone who understands the genre, it's obvious that black metal wasn't a genre built off of an idea of "perfection" in any sense of the term. A genre that was essentially formed around Norwegian teenagers creating demo tapes in their basement and selling them to eager tape-traders seldom worried about creating high-quality productions and spot-on performances, yet many essential masterpieces were created from this minimalist, "seemingly" imperfect attitude. Of course, aside from some highlight titles, the early 90's black metal scene featured heaping piles of atrocious demo-tapes. Although Crimson Moon would go on to do much better things, their self-titled debut demo can easily fit into that "atrocious" pile of releases that I've referenced earlier. If Crimson Moon has any redeemable qualities whatsoever, they are deeply buried underneath a horrendous production, boring compositions, and sloppy musicianship. It's clear that Scorpios had some good ideas in this demo, and I'm glad that they were fulfilled later in his career. But as far as this 1994 demo is concerned, I can't recommend this to anybody, except for maybe a die-hard Crimson Moon fan. Aside from the novelty factor of owning such a rare demo, I could even see them being disappointed as well.

The music here is raw, old school black metal in its purest form. Think something like Darkthrone or early Burzum. Crimson Moon is a rather short demo, clocking in at 9 minutes exactly. This length has a positive and negative effect - the bad part is that the demo is so damn short, but the good part is that I don't think I could handle anything much longer. The production is the real crippling factor here - the sound is so weak that it's hard to actually comprehend any of the instruments. It's just a big, unidentifiable wall of sound. If you're listening to the demo through headphones, the sound will randomly drift from one side to another. Production aside, Crimson Moon is mediocre at best. It's typical black metal with little variation and unremarkable compositions. The programmed drums are horrendous, and considering that's the only instrument that's adequately audible, that creates yet another problem. If you want to here some good Crimson Moon, check out one of their full-length albums. This demo has the "proceed with caution" sticker all over it.

I enjoy Crimson Moon's later efforts, but this debut demo is actually a somewhat painful listen for me. Die-hard fans of Scorpios' work may want to have this one, but I could even see them being let down when comparing it to the much-improved albums that he's created further down the road. Despite some of the good intentions here, the most I can give this debut demo is a small 1 star rating. I was considering going lower, but in all fairness there are some decent moments and, despite all its flaws, it does convey a somewhat hypnotic dark atmosphere. Still, this is a prime example of how much a band can improve in just a few years.
