Dead Meadow first came together in 1998 and included members Jason Simon on vocals and guitar, Steve Kille on bass and Mark Laughlin on drums. They shared a love for psychedelic hard rock bands like Black Sabbath, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Hawkwind. These influences set the tone for Dead Meadow's music, dominated by a slow groove and lots of guitar distortion.

Their first two albums - 2001's "Dead Meadow" and "Howls from the Hills", the band released on Tolotta Records, owned by Fugazi bassist Joe Lally. John Peel heard the records and offered the band to do a Peel Session, which they recorded in 2002. In the same year Dead Meadow issued a live album "Got Live if You Want It" (reference to The Rolling Stones' 1966 live record). 2002 also saw bassist Kille collaborating with The Cassettes on their debut album.

Warthur
Dead Meadow's tripped-out heavy psych style finds hem working on the borderland of stoner rock, but whereas much stoner rock revolves around 1970s nostalgia, Dead Meadow sound like the real thing - like a group scooped up from the early 1970s, carried forward in time on waves of bong smoke and by the power of their esoteric jams and given a modern studio to craft their works in. The riffs are a little heavier, but more or less everything else here follows the heavy psych playbook to perfection. It isn't perfect or revolutionary, but it's a fun diversion for anyone who likes a bit of the old space rock.
