DISGRACE WORM formed in 2016 in Merida, Mexico situated on the Yucatan peninsula and has so far released one self-titled album in 2017 as a digital download. This band features Vago Cetina (guitar, vocals), Marvin Vargaz (guitar, vocals), Frediablo Buenfil (drums) and Mario Morales (bass).
This band creates a mix of old school death metal, 90s sludge metal with elements of doom and on its debut full-length cranks out a series of 10 tracks that add up to the almost 58 minute running time. Fairly obscure, this band can pretty much be found on YouTube and nowhere else despite merging rather recently in 2016 in the metal world.
Nothing really exciting about this album. It basically covers the basics of doom metal with slow plodding tempos accompanied by Black Sabbath inspired guitar riffs along with a sludge metal guitar tone and some moments of death metal bombast. It ticks off all the proper boxes but never really breaks off into its own world. In fact there’s zero indication that this band emerged from Mexico and zero indications that the band has any original offerings to the death / doom / sludge metal lexicon whatsoever.
In addition to being rather mediocre in quality, this album is almost an hour’s length in playing time and gets rather tedious in its emphatic procession into doomy sludge metal terrain. Nothing bad about it but nothing really outstanding either. This is the perfect example of middle of the road that satisfies on a certain level but doesn’t deviate from the tourist brochure invitation into a particular genre of metal. OK for what it is but far from making you want to return for repeated visits.
