Genre: blackened speed metal
Embracing all things evil, the Finnish speed metal quintet Evilnight released a demo back in March which was distributed by Hell's Headbangers. As with many other artists associated with Hell's Headbangers, Evilnight represent the grittier and filthier end of the metal spectrum.
The tunes on this demo are probably best described as blackened speed metal. They're fast and straightforward, emphasizing aggression and taking Motörhead-esque abrasiveness to the Nth degree. There is thus plenty of fun to be had listening to this release, which offers fast, sometimes crusty, drumbeats and harsh vocals. Musically, there is some good stuff here if you like dirty speed metal. Uncharacteristically melodic is 'Lord of Darkstar', which is actually a very good piece of music; sadly, it is dominated by annoying sampled dialog, which really ruins the entire track.
The production is a bit rough with the first four tracks, which are taken from the band's "The Redrum Tapes" demo, being of a better froduction than the remaining tracks, which are more lo-fi. Embracing old school metal's love for reverb, Evilnight have sadly drowned the vocals in reverb, which is not only annoying but also necessary. The lyrics are also a bit over the top and at times kind of infantile, trying to hard to be macho.
If you are into retro dirty speed metal and are not squirmish about silly sexist lyrics, then you should check out this release; you're bound to have great fun listening to it.
