Though they seem unheard of to the general populace, Gävle, Sweden’s GADGET has roots that trace back to 1997. At that time, GADGET existed as the grinding alter-ego of a metal-core band whose members, including GADGET progenitor William Blackmon, simply switched instruments. This early version of GADGET existed long enough to record one demo and then disappear at the end of '98.

In late '99, Blackmon joined local death metal troupe WITHERED BEAUTY and another local grind outfit in his spare time. The compromises of both were unfulfilling so Blackmon decided to take things back to the proverbial drawing board and, as he recounts, "start making music for myself, by myself and with myself."

The second coming of GADGET was starting to take place. "I just kept the name since I came up with it." Blackmon says. He continues, "GADGET was planned to be a solo project. I

GADGET The Great Destroyer

Not only thrash nor grindcore but also a bit melodious and sensitive beneath the dead sea actually. First of all, let me say thanks to Alan Brockway for such a brilliant and fulminant recommendation. My brain has been broken owing to excessive head-banging. Reminds me of my first A. C. experience that completely stroke me. This album (ep?) consists of 17 short (but speedy) tracks and all of them should be unified as a 27-minute suite ... we cannot listen to this stuff with breathing enough eventually.

Bill's drumming is not simply speedy nor precise but enthusiastic and bravery. Every single beat gives us massive pleasure. Through Fred's bass we can get strictly down to the Gadgearth. Completely immersed in intriguing, impressive Rikard's guitar, and finally perfectly blown away into the inferno by Emil's magnificent voices. The terrific quartet please please us all through the creation. On the other hand, it's amazing too the titled track or so has obvious essence of delicacy and tragedy. We can hear "variations" of GADGET core and this variation might give us power of musical life, I imagine.

Exhumed / Gadget is a split release by Swedish grindcore act Gadget and American grindcore act Exhumed. The split was released in 2001 by Relapse Records.

There are 7 tracks in all on the 13:07 minute long split. Obviously most of the tracks on the split are very short. The 3 Exhumed tracks are in their typical goregrind/ early Carcass influenced style. They even play a cover of the classic Carcass track Exhume to Consume. Gadget´s 4 tracks are more in the Napalm Death tradition with touches of the crust grindcore sound that a band like Nasum are famous for. Gadget are often compared to Nasum and rightly so IMO. At least based on the 4 tracks that are featured here.

The sound quality is pretty lo-fi and in Exhumed´s case downright filhty.

This split is more than anything a fan release, and while the quality isn´t bad it´s not really good either and a 2 star rating is warranted.
