GOTHIC SLAM picture
Gothic Slam were a thrash metal band in the late 80's/early 90's based in Hoboken/Jersey City, New Jersey. They released 2 acclaimed records of groove-laden thrash at the height of thrash metal popularity, "Killer Instinct" for New York based Torrid Records, and "Just A Face in The Crowd", which saw major label distribution through the Sony/Epic distribution network. Gothic Slam were known for the intensity of their live shows, and were regulars at "L'Amours" in Brooklyn and "Streets" in New Rochelle, New York, where they were wildly popular. The cover photograph for "Just A Face in The Crowd" was shot at "Streets", and featured the crowd at one of their shows. The band members were placed in the photograph after the fact, signifying the fact that they thought of themselves as kids in the crowd, a street level respect that kept them a constant draw wherever they played.

"Just a Face in the Crowd" is the seconnd full-length studio album by US, Hoboken/Jersey City, New Jersey based thrash metal act Gothic Slam. The album was released through Roadracer Records in 1989. It´s the successor to "Killer Instinct" from 1988 and proved to be the band´s last release before disbanding in 1993 (although a demo was recorded in 1991 but shelved).

Stylistically the material on "Just a Face in the Crowd" continue the thrash metal style with crossover leanings (the music for example features riot gang backing vocals) that was introduced on "Killer Instinct" (1988). Gothic Slam are well playing and lead vocalist Daniel Gomez delivers a passionate and powerful performance. He has a voice and vocal style which can be described as a combination of Bon Scott (AC/DC) and Steve "Zetro" Souza (Exodus), although he maybe lacks the uniqueness to his performance as his influences are able to deliver.

"Just a Face in the Crowd" features 9 original tracks and a cover of "Thunder and Lightning" by Thin Lizzy. Both the originals and the cover are well performed, energetic, and entertaining, and "Just a Face in the Crowd" is well produced too, which provides the material with good conditions to shine. The songwriting is relatively memorable and effective, but Gothic Slam don´t produce anything you haven´t heard before. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is still warranted though, as this is a good quality recording.

"Killer Instinct" is the debut full-length studio album by US, Hoboken/Jersey City, New Jersey based thrash metal act Gothic Slam. The album was released through Torrid Records in 1988. Gothic Slam were one of many thrash metal acts in the mid- to late eighties who achived mainly local success but didn´t make much impact beyond their home area. They only released two studio albums before disbanding.

The music on "Killer Instinct" is pretty old school thrash metal with some added groove based elements. It´s "in Your Face", raw and well played. Several riffs on the album remind me of some of the "classic" riffs on "Kill 'em All (1983)" by Metallica. Exodus is also a reference but that´s mostly because of the vocal delivery by Daniel Gomez which somewhat resemples the vocal style of Steve "Zetro" Souza (not quite as nasal and snarling). There is a healthy dose of humour on the album too, which is something I greatly value. Just take a listen to the funky opening riff in "Skankin´". These guys were all about having fun while delivering their energetic thrash metal to the people. Another great thing about the album are the great guitar solos. I like how the solos by one of the guitarists come out of the right speaker while the solos by the other guitarist come out of the left speaker. Nice old fashioned effect.

...it´s not necessarily the most innovative approach but it´s a damn charming one and "Killer Instinct" is an album worth a purchase if you´re a fan of old school US thrash metal. A 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is warranted.
