Genre: atmospheric blackened death metal
Hic Iacet is one of the great mysteries of Spanish extreme metal, and nobody knows who the band's members actually are. This shrould of mystery suits the music on this release very well.
Exploring the muddy waters between atmospheric black metal and atmospheric death metal, "Prophecy of Doom" offers metal with lots of blastbeats and chaotic guitar figures. It sound more chaotic than it is, because mysterious Spaniards have really oomphed up the reverb to create an atmospheric feel. The deep guttural vocals are also drowned in reverb, generating much the same effect that we hear in a lot of atmospheric funeral doom.
The main focus is on atmosphere and there are absolutely no catchy hooks and very few memorable riffs. This is, of course, exactly what the Jic Iacet want to achieve with their music, so, although this kind of music does not really rock my world, I can at least acknowledge the artistic success of this release.
Fans of atmospheric and ambient black and death metal should definitely do themselves a favor and check out "Prophecy of Doom" for themselves.
