INIQUITY picture
From the simplistic demo that got them signed onto their first label to their latest album (Grime), Iniquity have shown how to dish out some brutal, technical and tight Death Metal. Their first record, 'Seranadium' sounded like the bastard child of Brutal Death Metal and Doom Metal, showcasing the highlights of the aforementioned genres, ironically the MCD that followed this stellar release, aptly named 'The Hidden Lore' showed the other side of Iniquity, the side that we all have come to love. This MCD caught the metal underground by the balls and showed once and for all that Iniquity was here to stay. With lineup changes not withstanding, these Danish psychopaths continued to serve the metal fans with uncompromising aggressive DM, with some of the most insane vocals ever!! Sadly, this band proved to be too talented, and announced their split-up soon after they released their best read more...

Grime is the 3rd full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Iniquity. There´s been a minor lineup change since the release of Five Across the Eyes (1999) as Brian Eriksen has been replaced by Kræn Meier ( Sacrificial) on guitar.

The music on Grime compared to the music on Five Across the Eyes hasn´t changed much though. It´s still rather technical US influenced brutal death metal that is the order of the day. The band is extremely well playing and we get some mean guttural growling to go with the brutal music. As with the predecessor I find the music a bit too one-dimensional in the end, but all songs are quality material for fans of the genre.

The production is professional and suits the music well.

While Grime doesn´t exactly make my blood boil fans of the more brutal part of death metal will probably enjoy it much more than I do. 3 stars are warranted.

Five Across the Eyes is the 2nd full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Iniquity. The lineup that recorded the debut album Serenadium (1996) have all been replaced by new faces. There´s not a single founding member left in the lineup which makes for quite an interesting situation.

Knowing this I´m actually a bit astounded that the music sounds very much like...well Iniquity. But then again as I recall there are no founding members left in Napalm Death either and they always sound unmistakably like Napalm Death now don´t they? The music on Five Across the Eyes has taken a notch up when talking about technical playing and brutality. Now I thought the debut was a pretty brutal album but this one beats the debut by a couple of lengths. The music is still primarily influenced by the technical part of the US death metal scene. I have one complaint which is a complaint I have about many of the more relentlessly brutal death metal albums that I hear and that´s lack of memorability and difficulty telling the songs apart. That´s a minor issue here too, but the songs are of high quality throughout so I guess I shouldn´t complain too much.

The production is pretty good. Better than on the debut.

Five Across the Eyes is a good quality death metal album and to those who enjoy technically well played and brutal death metal I find the album highly recommendable. I prefer my death metal a bit more emotionally varied though so a 3 star rating is warranted from me.

INIQUITY Serenadium

Serenadium is the debut full-length studio album by Danish death metal act Iniquity. Graced with one of those ugly computer animated nineties cover artworks I don´t exactly feel welcome but after taking a listen to the music on the album my initial turn off disappears completely.

The music on the album is brutal death metal which is obviously very influenced by the technical US death metal scene. There are very few melodic moments on the album but there are actually enough to make this album a rather memorable one even though it´s very brutal. A couple of guests on keyboards and Cello add a little variation to the otherwise brutal music. The vocals are some of the most mean guttural growling vocals I´ve heard in a while. Unlike most undecipherable growling vocalists, Brian Petrowsky ( while not easily understandable) really sounds great. It´s the delivery of the vocals that just seem to please me a lot. The band make sure to vary the tempo in the songs to keep them exciting throughout and overall they are a very technically skilled unit. Drummer Jacob Olsen would leave Iniquity after the recording of the album and it´s actually new drummer Jesper Frost who is on the band picture in the booklet.

The production is good but could have been better.

Besides a few acts the Danish death metal scene in the nineties never really crossed the borders of Denmark. Danish death metal don´t really have a signature sound like their neighbours in Sweden or the famed brutal US death metal sound, so many acts ended up sounding like pale clones of bigger internationally known acts. Iniquity are not a pale clone on Serenadium allthough they draw lots of influences from especially the brutal US death metal sound. On the other hand they are not the most original act either but I enjoy Serenadium for what it is. A good brutal death metal album with mostly memorable songs, good energy and good musicianship. A 3.5 star rating is deserved.
