KRISIUN Unmerciful Order

UMUR
"Unmerciful Order" is an EP release by Brazilian death/thrash metal act Krisiun. The EP was released through Dynamo Records in March 1994. Krisiun formed in 1990 and released three demos and a couple of split releases before being signed to Dynamo Records for the release of "Unmerciful Order". While Krisiun are mostly known as the trio of the Kolesne (and Camargo) brothers Moyses, Max, and Alex, the band were a quartet in the early years and therefore the material on "Unmerciful Order" also features the playing of rhythm guitarist Mauricio Nogueira.

While "Unmerciful Order" is catalogued as an EP, it´s actually more a compilation of early recordings by the band (including the two tracks from the 1993 "Rises from Black/Harmony Dies" split release with Harmony Dies). Therefore the sound quality is a bit up and down and it´s audible that the tracks were recorded at diffferent recording sessions. Stylistically it´s raw, noisy, and relatively simple old school death metal. The vocals are growling and brutal, the drums pound away in an almost unhinged fashion, and the guitars sound like a buzzaw to metal. It´s safe to say this isn´t a professional production job, but it´s definitely authentic and raw to the bone. The material is pretty one-dimensional in nature and while Krisiun would go on to have a relatively successful career, it´s not obvious why from listening to "Unmerciful Order".

To my ears, it´s a below standard quality release for the genre both in terms of production values, musicianship, and songwriting, and it´s not a release which is easy to appreciate unless you enjoy the most raw and simple old school demo death metal recordings, or maybe the earliest releases by the unholy German trinity of Kreator, Sodom, and Destruction (the rawness and primal nature of the music point in that direction). A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.

KRISIUN Forged in Fury

UMUR
"Forged in Fury" is the 9th full-length studio album by Brazilian death metal act Krisiun. The album was released through Century Media Records in August 2015. It´s the successor to "The Great Execution" from 2011. Krisiun was formed in 1990 and is a family band consisting of the three brothers Alex Camargo (Bass, Vocals), Max Kolesne (Drums), Moyses Kolesne (Guitars). Despite their different surnames they are actual brothers.

Stylistically the music on "Forged in Fury" continues the old school death metal attack of "The Great Execution (2011)". Brutal and commanding yet fully intelligible growling vocals, fast- and mid-paced brutal grooves, and more than one nod towards the most raw part of the 80s thrash movement. The Erik Rutan sound production brings the music into present day though, so while the material is delightfully old school it doesn´t sound derivative and generally features enough contemporary elements never to stagnate.

On the other hand the music is not terribly original sounding either, but it´s well written and catchy, and Krisiun delivers the music with the right amount of skill, fierce aggression, and brutality. They spice it up with some fairly melodic lead work, which works great for the variation of the album. Highlights include album opener "Scars of the Hatred", "Ways of Barbarism", and "Soulless Impaler", but the material on the 12 track, 59:58 minutes long album, is both consistent in quality and style.

Upon conclusion "Forged in Fury" is another strong album release by Krisiun. It features very few surprises and if you enjoyed "The Great Execution (2011)", you´re almost guaranteed listening pleasure from this one. Krisiun is one of those bands who doesn´t promise more than they can deliver (which is good quality death metal craftmanship), and if you set your expectations to what you´re gonna hear "Forged in Fury" is an album that can blow you away with it´s organic delivery and catchy old school material. A 4 star (80%) rating is deserved.

KRISIUN The Great Execution

UMUR
"The Great Execution" is the 8th full-length studio album by Brazilian death metal act Krisiun. The album was released through Century Media Records in October 2011. Having existed since the early nineties, Krisiun are one of the most successful death metal acts from Brazil. Unless you count the formative years where Krisiun was shortly a four-piece, the band have always been a three-piece consisting of the three brothers Alex Camargo (bass, vocals), Max Kolesne (drums) and Moyses Kolesne (guitars).

The music on "The Great Execution" is death metal with quite a few thrash metal traits. The vocals are brutal yet intelligible growls though and that feature defines the music as death metal to me. A combination of Sepultura (the brutal thrash metal riffing) and Behemoth (the brutal growls placed high in the mix and the way the blast beats are played) could be a valid description, but Krisiun don´t particularly sound like any other act.

The band are an extremely well playing unit. It´s actually to a point where they at times seem to melt together to one grinding brutal organism. I guess nothing beats true blood/brotherhood when it comes to understanding each other. At 61:57 minutes the album is slightly too long to my ears, but it´s a small issue when the quality of the bands music, their strong musicianship and a really detailed and powerful sound production are on such a high level. While the album may be a little long for an extreme metal release, the band succeed very well in keeping the intensity level high all the way from album opener "The Will to Potency" and until album closer "Shadows of Betrayal" ends. This is simply through and through a quality release and a 4 - 4.5 star (85%) rating is fully deserved.
