"Grey-Flannel Souled" is the second full-length studio album by Swedish death/thrash metal act Leukemia. The album was released through Step One Records in 1994. It´s the successor to "Suck My Heaven" from 1993. The core of the band is still the duo of Kentha Philipson (bass, drum programming, guitars, and vocals) and Jocke Granlund (vocals), but on "Grey-Flannel Souled", Tobbe Ander has been added to the lineup as lead guitarist. "Grey-Flannel Souled" was recorded at Unisound Recordings with producer Dan Swanö (who also performs backing vocals, piano, and bass). The material was recorded in 25 hours during two recording sessions.

Stylistically the material on "Grey-Flannel Souled" is a thrash infused mid-paced type of death metal. The vocals are shouting raw vocals rather than death metal growling, and the riffs are sometimes closer to thrash metal style riffs than to death metal ditto. The 10 tracks on the 48:27 minutes long album are decent, but not great compositions, and it´s not an album featuring many standout moments. While I can live with the relatively mediocre songwriting (I´m not overly thrilled, but I´m not completely put off either), the programmed drums disturb the listening experience, because of the stiff artificial way they are programmed and the even more artificial tone of the programmed drums. I have nothing against programmed drums if they add to the music, but in this case it´s obvious that a human drummer would have added an important organic element to the music, which could have elevated the quality of the compositions.

The rushed recording process, which may be because of lack of funds, is also audible, as the sound production is overall not that well sounding. It´s not just the tone of the programmed drums, which stick out as below the standards for the genre, the guitars sound weak too, and "Grey-Flannel Souled" is simply not a particularly pleasant listening experience. A 2.5 star (50%) rating is warranted.

"Suck My Heaven" is the debut full-length studio album by Swedish death metal act Leukemia. The album was released through Black Mark Production in 1993. Leukemia was formed in 1989 and worked as a two-piece project act consisting of Kentha Philipson (drums) and Jocke Granlund (Vocals). All other instruments and vocals are delivered by guest/session musicians. Among those are prolific artists like L-G Petrov (Entombed) on backing vocals, and Jörgen Sandström (Entombed, Grave) on bass.

The music on "Suck My Heaven" is a hybrid death/thrash metal style with experimental/progressive moments. The latter mostly consists of some pretty odd and at times even silly sections, but they are few and far between, and the music predominantly features a more dark and serious atmosphere. "Suck My Heaven" was recorded at the now legendary Sunlight Studios and features the "classic" sound from that studio. The guitars are slightly more thin sounding and not as "buzzing" as usual on recordings from Sunlight, but especially the drums feature that unmistakable sound.

While Leukemia is generally considered a death metal act, the riffing on the album is often closer to thrash metal than to death metal and the same can be said about the thrash oriented raw vocals, which is the primary vocal style on the album. There are growling vocals on the album too though.

The material on the 9 track, 47:03 minutes long album is relatively well written but not necessarily that memorable in the long run, and paired with the thin guitar sound, and a vocal style which is a bit powerless sounding, "Suck My Heaven" isn´t the most successful sounding release to my ears. It´s not bad either though and there are several interesting sections and high level musicianship to be found on the album too, so a 3 star (60%) rating isn´t all wrong.

LEUKEMIA Love

"Love" is the 3rd full-length studio album by Swedish death metal act Leukemia. Leukemia were an act that were active in the early nineties and released two studio albums in "Suck My Heaven (1993)" and "Grey-Flannel Souled (1994)". In 1994 Leukemia changed their name to Lame and recorded an album titled "Love". The album was shelved though and it wasn´t until 2008 that it was dug out and mastered by Dan Swanö (Edge of Sanity, Bloodbath, Nightingale...among others). "Love" was finally released through Vic Records in February 2012 under the Leukemia monicker.

The music on the album is Swedish old school death metal in the sophisticated end of the spectra. Dan Swanö´s involvement is obvious throughout the album. Not only because he sings a couple of clean vocal parts and also occasionally adds semi-proggy synths to the sound, but also because the sound production and especially the guitar sound remind me of Edge of Sanity. Leukemia play a very eclectic type of death metal with influences from all sorts of genres. Tracks like "Emotionally Dead" and "Roses" are semi-progressive in nature but there are more straight forward death metal tracks on the album too. Common for all tracks is that you don´t really know what to expect from them.

Besides the Edge of Sanity sounding guitar sound, which is a nice feature, the sound production suffers a bit from a thin sounding drum production.

To my ears "Love" is a bit of an odd death metal release but I guess fans of the most eclectic Edge of Sanity material can find something to like here. Personally I enjoy the album with some reservations and I´d say a 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
