Taiwanese slam death metal outfit MAGGOT COLONY release their second offering SPEWING THE VIOLATED SOULS in a short EP form of only 11:26. The band was only formed in 2013 and displays how brutal death metal has taken off in all parts of the world even in Tapei, Taiwan.
Musically this is pretty standard brutal slam death metal that displays extremely talented musicians mastering all the pummeling rhythms you would expect from such music. Jacob NIng's guitar riffs are fast, furious and down-tuned. Larry Wang’s bass and Kane Chen’s blast beat drums are extremely fast and brutal and this band has definitely mastered the art of this most extreme kind of metal very well. The one wee little problem with MAGGOT COLONY is they sound a tad generic like every other band of this type right down to the puked guttural vocal style.
This particular release while being a rather standard brutal slam death metal EP is more notable for the excellent artwork created by the Chinese novel illustrator Guang Yang. The trapped beings in tentacles having their souls sucked out by a giant bleeding heart is truly what metal album covers are all about! Just as brutal and gory as the music itself.
Yay for Taiwanese brutal death metal! I just hope it gets more original. This does sound brutal old school with a shiny modern production that doesn’t get in the way from keeping it sound raw, primeval and majorly kick ass. Despite the generic songwriting the performances of the three tracks are top notch. This EP is short and to the point and certainly packs a punch. No room for ballads or anything of the sort. This is an adrenaline rushed turned up to full intensity all the way.
