"Salvation Never Comes" is the 4th full-length studio album by Polish death metal act Mortis Dei. The album was released through Metal Scrap Records in July 2014. It´s the successor to "Last Failure" from 2009 and features quite a few lineup changes compared to the lineup who recorded the predecessor. Lead vocalist Mirosław Harenda has switched to playing guitar and new lead vocalist is Łukasz Kobusiński. Guitarist Piotr Niemczewski has left and has been replaced by Bartosz Gawroński. The remaining members of the lineup are drummer Maciej Urbaniak and bassist Grzegorz Zaremba.

Stylistically the material on the 9 track, 31:44 minutes long album continue the death metal style of the predecessor. It´s well played death metal featuring tempo changes, a good level of brutality in the riff and vocal department, and the occasional more melodic moment (particularly the melodic guitar solos). It´s all well performed and well produced too, but although the tracks are all well written and the album is enjoyable while it plays, it´s not an album featuring many standout tracks. It´s a solid and consistent quality release, but in the bigger picture it´s a fairly standard release in the genre.

Mortis Dei have made little adjustments to their sound over the years, and especially the predecessor and this one have shown nice potential, but if they want to take it to the next level, they will have to concentrate on writing more unique and memorable material. They have all the tools to succeed in that as they are skilled musicians, and obviously have access to professional recording fascilities. As it is "Salvation Never Comes" is still a quality release though, and while I may feel it could have been even better with more memorable songwriting, a 3.5 star (70%) rating is still deserved.

MORTIS DEI Last Failure

"Last Failure" is the 3rd full-length studio album by Polish death metal act Mortis Dei. The album is a self-released effort released in March 2009. It´s the successor to "My Lovely Enemy" from 2006 and it features the exact same lineup who recorded the predecessor.

Stylistically Mortis Dei pretty much continue the predominantly mid-paced heavy and groove laden death metal style of "My Lovely Enemy (2006)", and "Last Failure" feels like a natural successor in terms of quality and style. The band incorporate melodic leads when that is needed and "Last Failure" is as a result fairly varied. Compared to the predecessor the vocal style has changed from relatively intelligible growling vocals to pretty much unintelligible growling vocals, which to my ears is a bit of a shame, as that type of growling vocals don´t really suit the music too well. It´s not a major distraction and the vocals are well performed, but I prefer the vocal style on "My Lovely Enemy (2006)".

"Last Failure" features a powerful, brutal, and clear sounding production, which suits the music well. It´s not a raw old school organic sounding production job, but the material aren´t old school death metal either, so that type of production probably wouldn´t have suited the material on the album. Upon conclusion "Last Failure" is another decent effort from Mortis Dei. There´s nothing groundbreaking or surprising here, but it´s a good solid quality release and a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is deserved.

MORTIS DEI My Lovely Enemy

UMUR
"My Lovely Enemy" is the 2nd full-length studio album by Polish death metal act Mortis Dei. The album was independently released in February 2006. It´s the successor to "The Loveful Act of Creation"" from 2003. There have been a couple of lineup changes since the predecessor as guitarist Marcin "Valeo" Walenczykowski has jumped ship, leaving Piotr Niemczewski to handle all guitars on the album. Lead vocalist Łukasz Kobusiński has been replaced by Mirosław Harenda.

Stylistically the material on the 9 track, 30:28 minutes long album is fairly standard death metal. It´s not purely old school or more dominantly modern sounding, just a good combination of standard death metal elements. The tempo is mostly mid-paced with heavy brutal riffs and rhythms and the vocals are relatively intelligible growling. So while I may not blow the trumpets of divine joy while listening to "My Lovely Enemy", less will do, and it´s actually quite a decent death metal release all things considered.

The musicianship is on a high level, the sound production is well sounding and suits the material well, and the songwriting is solid and relatively memorable. What Mortis Dei lack is that last piece to make their music transcend the standard quality level, which is having a unique sound, or tracks which are more than just well written and enjoyable while they play. Still a 3 - 3.5 star (65%) rating is deserved.

MORTIS DEI The Loveful Act Of Creation

UMUR
"The Loveful Act Of Creation" is the debut full-length studio album by Polish death metal act Mortis Dei. The album is a self-released affair from 2003. The band was founded as far back as 1992 and have released a string of demos in the intermediate years.

The band play a mostly US influenced death metal style (I hear a couple of references to Deicide) with some really convincing growling vocals in front. The musicianship is pretty strong and there are some nice soloing on the album in addition to the more "regular" death metal elements. The sound production is decent but it´s not the strongest production I´ve experienced. The music is also pretty standard for the genre and "The Loveful Act Of Creation" is overall not the most memorable death metal release. While the album is playing it´s still good entertainment though and I´d say a 3 star (60%) rating is warranted.
