Only Living Witness was an American metal / hardcore band.

The band was formed in 1989 in Boston by Jonah Jenkins (vocals) and Eric Stevenson (guitar, ex-Formicide). Eric's brother Kevin Stevenson (guitar) and former Formicide-bandmate Roy Costa (bass) completed the line-up. In 1991 Kevin and Roy were replaced by Craig Silverman and Chris Crowley. Kevin and Roy would go on to form The Shods.

Only Living Witness released a few demos before being signed by Century Media Records. Their debut CD Prone Mortal Form was released in 1993. The band performed concerts in 14 countries including Sweden, England, France, Canada, Italy, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. In 1996 their follow-up CD Innocents was released, but the band had already split up.

Only Living Witness briefly reformed in 2008 for four reunion shows: 14 June and 21 June at The Middle East in Cambridge, MA, 22 August in Clinton, MA, and the final show

"Innocents" is the 2nd full-length studio album by US, Boston based alternative rock/metal act Only Living Witness. The album was released through Century Media Records in December 1996. Only Living Witness was a rather shortlived act (formed in 1989) and only released two albums in the nineties (and a couple of demos prior to that) before disbanding (This one and "Prone Mortal Form (1993)". "Innocents" was released after the band had split up). They were actually relatively successful while they existed, and generally received positive criticism from reviewers back then.

The music on "Prone Mortal Form (1993)", was a heavy and energy pumped alternative rock/metal style in the vein of Life of Agony and especially the heavier parts of Alice in Chains. On "Innocents" I still think the Life of Agony reference is valid, but not so much the Alice in Chains reference. Instead I hear a lot of references to an act like Stone Temple Pilots. So "Innocents" is not quite as heavy or energetic as "Prone Mortal Form (1993)".

The musicianship is still excellent and lead vocalist Jonah Jenkins is still a force to be reckoned with, so all is well in that department. The sound production is not as powerful and genereally a bit more polished that the sound production on the predecessor, but it´s still a professional and well sounding production. Overall "Innocents" is another quality release by Only Living Witness, but compared to "Prone Mortal Form (1993)" I´d say it´s slightly less interesting. Maybe I miss the raw power of the debut album and find the more dynamic songwriting on "Innocents" too "mature". A 3.5 star (70%) rating is deserved.

"Prone Mortal Form" is the debut full-length studio album by US, Boston based alternative rock/metal act Only Living Witness. The album was released through Century Media Records in May 1993. Only Living Witness was a rather shortlived act (formed in 1989) and only released two albums in the nineties (and a couple of demos prior to that) before disbanding (This one and "Innocents (1996)". The latter was released after the band had split up). They were actually relatively successful while they existed, and generally received positive criticism from reviewers back then.

The music on "Prone Mortal Form" is hard rocking alternative metal in the vein of Life of Agony and especially Alice in Chains. There´s a slight hardcore edge to their music when it´s most hard edged and raw, but that´s not a dominant element in their sound. Lead vocalist Jonah Jenkins has a rather distinct voice and his vocal melodies are often not instantly memorable. So although this is pretty regular vers/chorus based music, the choruses are not always sing along friendly from the get go. In other words the music requires a few spins to sink in, but in this case that´s a positive, as those melody lines have a longivity to them that you don´t often find.

The 10 tracks on the 35.57 minutes long album are for the most part heavy, hard rocking, sweaty and pumped with energy except for the two short instrumentals, "Silo" and "Darkly", which work as little atmospheric breathers on an otherwise busy album. To my ears both could have been developed into "real" tracks and as a consequence could have made "Prone Mortal Form" a more dynamic release. They still do a great job as breathers though.

So the songwriting could have been slightly more dynamic and the vocal melody lines maybe slightly more catchy, but other than that "Prone Mortal Form" is a very impressive debut album by Only Living Witness. The musicianship is top notch, the sound production is razor sharp and powerful, and overall it´s just an album that reeks class. A 4 star (80%) rating is deserved.
