The etymology of the delightfully named Pissing Razors originates from the band's original lead vocalist, who claimed he was in a whorehouse and, subsequently coming out with an STD (gonorrhea), decided to have their debut album produced by ex-Sabbat guitarist Andy Sneap. The band, hailing from El Paso, Texas, would later be fronted by Joe Rodriguez, previously a Lieutenant in the US Navy.

Pissing Razors history in El Paso can be traced back to Rodriguez and Lynch's tenure with 90's metal band Sadist, the band folding when their singer joined the Navy. Lynch founded the soon to be titled Pissing Razors with Eddie Garcia on drums, his brother on bass and vocalist Loco Pelon. Rodrigues supplanted Pelon in 1995 as the band toured America with Stuck Mojo and Pro-Pain. The band toured Europe and America as support to Pro-Pain during early 1998.

PISSING RAZORS is a band that, surprise, surprise, caught my attention because of their ridiculous band name which derives from that lovely feeling of urinating while suffering from a venereal disease! After independently releasing “Psycho Punko Metal Groove” they attracted enough attention to sign on to Noise Records where they put out this eponymous release. The band comes from El Paso, TX and is one of the many thrashy groove metal bands to emerge in the 90s. The music is very much of the early Marchine Head or 90s Pantera style but it lacks the original compositions and clever guitar solos. The vocals of Joe Rodriguez, while getting the job done, don't quite evoke the same passion as Phil Anselmo did in 90s Pantera.

While the band does muster up some original ideas here and there I just can't help but feeling throughout the album that they are trying to be Pantera only failing to measure up in pretty much every way. The music is played well with the groovy bass and guitar dynamics being the strongest aspect but the lack of compelling songwriting is really what makes this a somewhat generic release for me. Listening to this album isn't at all as bad as PISSING RAZORS, but neither does it give the sensation of PISSING perfumed fluffy bunnies either. Just decent enough not to flush down the urinal though.

You can tell from the very first seconds of Pissing Razors’ first and only official Live Album, Live In The Devil’s Triangle, that the band mean business. It kicks off instantly into a noisy powerful fury, and from that point onwards scarcely lets up in intensity at all for its sixteen-tack, hour-long duration.

With the enthusiastic crowd riled up, tracks like ‘Burning Bridges,’ ‘Dodging Bullets,’ ‘Mass Corruption’ and ‘Cursed’ are blasted through with a fiery and sincere performance that is at once razor sharp, but still utterly teeming with energy and passion.

Do you know those rare brilliant live albums where the songs are just even better than in the studio? Live albums that make you feel like you are at the actual gig and aren’t overproduced but still sound fantastic? Albums like Pantera’s 101 Proof? This is such a live album. If you were only to get one Pissing Razors album, you could happily chose this and get a stellar, no-filler collection of their brightest moments, all put together in a great performance.

The album features the then-new singer Andrew Acosta on vocals on his first recorded appearance with the band, as well as Cesar Sota on guitar filling out the line-up alongside long time member Rick Valles on bass and absolute virtuoso drummer Eddy Garcia. The 2002 record features a career spanning setlist that, more than any other release, really shows what this underrated Texan Groove Metal band were capable of. The band have a superb formula, and here that formula is made manifest, and elevated beyond its station to become greater than the sum of its parts for once, and it is really worth your time checking it out.

Do you like bands like Pantera, Machine Head, Fear Factory, Prong and Soulfly? You may love Pissing Razors too if you give this album a try.
