Happy Fucking New Year!

As the year comes to a close, and the holiday decorations are taken down, one usually would like to take a well-deserved break to relax. For some though, it may be nice to end the year with a metal Christmas album.

Psychostick's 2007 EP, The Flesh Eating Rollerskate Holiday Joyride, is both fun and cynical. Just one look at song titles like "Holiday Hate", "Jolly Old Sadist", "Red Snow", and the classic "Happy Fucking New Year" tells you that this isn't your average Christmas-gone metal album. While of course just looking at the lyrics will produce some laughs, this is Psychostick we're talking. They're a perfect example of a band that combines comedy with catchy riffs and overall great musicianship.

Playing their typical blend of various metal styles, this EP delivers 8 tracks of holiday cynicism. "Holiday Hate" is a nice jab at commercialism, "Red Snow" is a downright depressing take on Rudolph, while "Happy Fucking New Year" is incredibly fun all-year-round. The latter has some absolutely killer funky bass licks, along with head-bang ready riffs.

Looking for some cynical catchy metal for the holidays? Check this EP out, it's a short but sweet treat. If you're too sick of the holidays to listen to this though, Psychostick's entire discography is full of hilarious varied metal. Hope you found this review helpful, feel free to comment!

Psychostick - IV: Revenge of the Vengeance

'IV: Revenge of the Vengeance' is the fourth studio album by Comedy metal band Psychostick. Do you need a laugh? 'GROW A BEARD!'. Do you want to headbang? 'GROW A BEARD!'. 'OBEY THE BEARD!'. I think I can safely say that Psychostick is the funniest band I've ever heard. What other bands can you think of that have written songs about awesome beards, annoying neighbors, being afraid of a duck, and mocked Deathcore? I can't think of any others, and the music kicks ass too.

Musically, I'd call Psychostick a combination of alt metal, thrash/groove, and hardcore/metalcore. Similar to Tenacious D's albums, the album includes many various skits in-between songs. The skits often act as intros to the following song. For example, before the mocking of deathcore entitled 'So. Heavy.', there is a skit called 'H-flat' where the band members want to play in H-flat when there is no such thing as H-flat. Speaking of 'So. Heavy.', the song features very awesome crunchy guitars while mocking deathcore's seemingly obsession with just being as heavy as possible. It's hilarious hearing vocalist "Rawrb" making random growls, and the band chanting things like 'This song is so heavy, it makes you want to punch a tornado'. The song 'Duck Kills', which is a song about being afraid of a duck, is a more thrash-oriented song. The bridge is hilarious with some bass-slaps and duck quacking. In the song about hating your neighbor, 'Loathe Thy Neighbor', has some great bass work.

The ultimate highlight of the album and a should-be metal anthem is the masterpiece 'Obey the Beard'. Lyrics about how awesome beards are combined with kick-ass thrash guitar/drums and bass slaps really makes this a masterpiece. Other hilarious lyrics include dogs liking socks, getting the 'Blue-screen of death', fighting about who gets the last piece of pizza, and more.

Overall, if you want some kick-ass music and hilarious lyrics Psychostick is for you. I haven't laughed as hard at any music since hearing Primus for the first time. If anyone asks me what some good comedy metal is, Psychostick is certainly the first band that I will recommend. Hope you found this review helpful.

Oh you wanted a "real" review. Okay then.

The humorcore masters in Psychostick are back with their fifth full-length album in the form of the aptly titled "Revenge of the Vengeance". The album contains hit songs such as 'Obey the Beard' and 'Dog Like Socks' which are already Youtube classics. Worth mentioning is 'So. Heavy.'. 'So. Heavy.' is a deathcore parody song, poking fun at deathcore bands' obsession with being so heavy that they all end up sounding alike anyway. Musically, the song is itself a deathcore and, ironically, one of the better deathcore songs I've heard. Yeah, the parody is better than the source material it parodies. Other great tracks are 'Quack Kills', a song about anatidaephobia (the fear of being watch by a duck), 'President Rhino', the modern metal ballad 'Blue Screen', their cover version of 'Danger Zone' (you know that awesome song from "Top Gun"), 'Bruce Campbell', and the awesome 'AWESOME' - and I agree that monster trucks that mow the lawn would be awesome. 'NSFW' features Bill Manspeaker from Green Jellÿ, and a section from 'Three Little Pigs' along with several themes from classical compositions. It's lyrics consist of only two words. One is 'shit', which is used once. The other word is used, like a million times. Guess what the other word is. As with many other comedy metal albums, there are several skits on this one - some are funnier than others. The production is extremely professional, which is impressive seeing that the album is fully produced by the band themselves. While you might expect a comedy metal band to focus more on the funny and less on the quality of the music, then you're wrong. These guys are excellent musicians and churn out one solid riff after the other, and the songs are extremely tightly. Stylistically, the music strikes me as generally being heavier than on previous albums.

This album is good... and stuff.

PSYCHOSTICK Obey the Beard

Grow a beard...

Genre: beard metal

Everything is better with a beard. I have a beard! I kick fucking ass! Why? Because I have a beard! You wanna kick fucking ass too? Then grow a beard! If not, well... then you have no choice but to bow in the dust and obey the beard!

Beards are so bad-ass that Psychostick even wrote a song about beard, reminding us that Chuck Norris, Jesus, and fucking God all have beards! And Chewbacca is a fucking beard! Obviously, Psychostick operate within the realm of comedy metal, and they have several hilarious songs under their belt. While some humor metal bands sacrifice musicianship, Psychostick are actually very skilled musicians. 'Obey the Beard' revolves around some driving and crushing riffs accompanied by a slappy bass and rock solid drums... which is miraculous, considering that the drummer does not have a beard.

The entire song is extremely well put together and tightly performed and may be enjoyed both for its humor and musical quality.

And stuff.
