Saturnus is a Danish Death/Doom metal band with emphasis on atmosphere. They also incorporated a touch of Gothic Metal to it (especially on their 2nd album "Martyre"). They're known for switching between 3 vocal styles - clean, growled and recitation.

In 1991 lead-vocalist Thomas A.G. Jensen started looking for people to start a death-metal band. He hooked up with bass-player Brian Hansen who was also looking for people into the same act. After a few months the band (at that time called "Assesino") was joined by a drummer and guitarist. In 1992 the drummer was replaced and an additional guitarist entered the band. In the following year a number of musicians entered and left the band.

In 1993 the people of Assesino were Thomas A.G. Jensen (vocal), Brian Hansen (bass), Christian Brenner (guitar), Pouli Choir (drums), Kim Sindahl (guitar). The band played at a metal-competition (Judgment Day) in BarBue

Saturnus delivers 6 years afetr martyre they still show they can deliver a great doom metal album, if you loved them before you'll love them again as thry have a distinctly different vocal style for the recitation but their still quite capabale of delivering an amazing doom metal album. thsi album has soem of tehir best melancholy atmospheres the vocals are suberb and teh riffing is fantastic i can't really fault this new direction that saturnus is taking it's different that martyre but not hugely different so if you're looking for a more modern approach to doom metal by veterns of the genre. a must listen

So Fill My Cup With...4.5/5

Saturnus's sound is prodominatly depressive, emontional, droning, atmospheric and martyre is no exception.

i like to think of this as being saturnus at their best with holy church like atmoshperes into growling doom metal and then into epic poetry rectical it's just truely somethign special.

the album starts with 7 a track that is mostly a church choir setting the tone for this album as doom within seconds of the first track being played, this track then segues into inflame thy heart which i consider to be a bit of progressive doom due to the 2 different distinct sounds in th song.

The first part is typical growling and rectial by saturnus this the stuff that makes me love them, then the second part sounds like the begining of a iron maiden song then builds into the doom metal version of ryadhyer goes to town-camel. the guitar in this part has never ceased giving me chills, with its progressive yet clearly doom riffs and solo.

so far 2 songs in and i'm hooked the 3rd song empty handed starts of with a nearly thrash metal sounding riff then goes int odeath metal growls and an amazing guitar riff matchng to vocals every step of the way. this song defenitly has teh best guitar i have heard from saturnus up until this point it's just unbelivable.

saturnus then returns to traditonal doom on track 4 Noir, another chuchl like atmoshphere and the amazing reciting of lyrics sends chills down my spine, then the rare occurence of clean vocals makes the song sound just even more epic and makes teh atmosphere just a little creepier.

Song 5 a poem(written in moonlight)sounds just liek christ goodbye i belive its an more up to date version of the song actully as i said in my first review of this band it's my favourite song by them so i don't see a point in reviewing this song here.

softly on the path you fade and thou art free,AMAZING SONGS LISTEN TO THOUS ART FREE 1 MILLION TIMES IT WILL NEVER SOUND OLD,and softly on the path is traditonal doom at it's very very best.

honestly the rest of the album just continues on like this and gets more and more amazing,i don't want to bore you with song by song reviews so i'll tel lyo ujust about another standout track on this album loss (in Memorium) this song is the song i would to descrive saturnus,if someone was to ask me about them i would say "listen to loss(in memorium)" it's just such a good track the rectitng is there the great keyobards as well the drums are solid as usual and teh guitar is some of the best i've heard.

theres too many good things about this album but again i'm biased becuase it's my favourite doom metal band. the album isn't perfect by anymeans but it's great doom and i really suggest you give it a listen

I do have a bias for this EP and band as it's my favorite doom metal band and this EP contains my favourite doom metal song christ goodbye(live)

6 tracks almost 36 minutes in length this is one EP you do not want to miss

while it contains influences from other genres it is true doom metal it contains one of the best doom metal songs i have ever heard christ goodbye and for a live version its soudns increbily well done and soudns very professional. cnrist goodbye and Rise of nakkiel are the standout tracks for me they sound amazing and reallyplaying well to the bands strengths of vreating great atmospheres and almost tribal sounds with the tom beats their drummer come up with.

the rest of the album is also quite good the new tracks are spectacular and remind me of a heavier version of the neo-folk/apoclypse folk band rome the vocal style changes between growling which i'm more used to hearing in doom metal, and talking its creates a great contrast and fits to the music perfectly

it truely would be a shame if you missed out on this EP

Veronika Decides to Die is the 3rd full-length studio album by Danish melodic doom/ death metal act Saturnus. The album was released in May 2006 by Firebox Records. Grau Records took care of the release in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

It´s been six long years since the release of the band´s second full-length studio album Martyre (2000), but not much has changed since that album was released. The music style is still melodic doom/ death metal with a sorrowfilled/ melancholic atmosphere. Acts like My Dying Bride and November´s Doom still come to mind. The quality of the compositions are fortunately even better than on the already great Martyre, so the lack of an original sound, which could have been a problem, isn´t that much of an issue. The vocal style varies between reciting/ speaking vocals, deep growls and raw singing. The lyrics are poetic in nature and suits the music very well. While there are certainly heavy doom laden guitar riffs enough to safisfy any doom metal fan, the addition of keyboards/ piano and melodic guitar leads give the music a "lighter" touch than most other doom metal acts.

The production by Flemming Rasmussen ( Metallica, Morbid Angel, Blind Guardian...etc.) is powerful and detailed.

Overall Veronika Decides to Die is just a notch better than Martyre and it´s great to hear that the band have honed their sound in the 6 years between the two albums. A 3.5 star rating is deserved.

Martyre is the second full-length studio album by Danish doom/ death metal act Saturnus. The album was released in January 2000 by Euphonious Records ( a Division of Voices of Wonder).

The music on the album is doom/ death metal in the vein of My Dying Bride, November´s Doom but with a goth twist that reminds me of acts like Paradise Lost and Tiamat. Saturnus do have their own sound though which is based on melancholic atmosphere. The vocals vary between deep growls, raw singing and reciting. The latter style is a big part of Saturnus sound and I´m sure it´s an aquired taste if that part of the music will please you. I think there are too many sections with this type of vocals and I would have appreciated more brutal growling. With that minor complaint out of the way, the music is actually very good. I like the keyboards by Anders Ro Nielsen which give the music much of it´s dark atmosphere, but also the melodic guitars. The pace is slow as in most doom/ death metal but there are some mid-paced parts too.

The production is warm and suits the music well. The sound is as heavy as on most doom/ death metal releases but dark and heavy enough to fulfill my expectations.

Martyre is a good album by Saturnus and if you´re interested in atmospheric/ melancholic doom/ death metal I find this album recommendable. 3.5 stars are deserved.
