UMUR
This is first demo release by US heavy metal/hard rock act The Mentors. The Mentors are notoriously known for their provocative lyrics about sex, drugs, alcohol and violence and already this early on the band´s style was in place.
With songtitles like "My Erection is over", "Funhole", and "Fuck the bottom", you know exactly what you´re gonna get on this release. Immature, sexually nasty, and provative lyrical themes are present and delivered "in your face". The musical style of the band is some rather primitive punk influenced hard rock not too far removed from some of the most raw and repetitive material by The Stooges.
Besides the occasional laugh at some of the most juvenile parts of the lyrics, there´s not much positive going on here. The delivery is untight and sloppy and the sound quality is raw and sounds like it´s recorded live in someone´s garage. Sure there´s something charming about such a raw and authentic performance, but the material generally aren´t strong enough to bear it. As far as demos go (and remember this is from 1981), this actually provides some listening enjoyment, but overall it´s not that impressive. For fans of the band this is probably an interesting historical document, but for more casual listeners, I´d recommend taking a listen to some of the early "classic" studio albums by the band instead. A 2 star (40%) rating is warranted.
